2022/23 Anthony Gordon

That would be the big question/concern I have for him really. Why can he not do aspects of the process that are very doable every week.

I'm not saying he should score every week, but against Leeds/Brentford he took up dangerous positions both in behind and in the space between their midfield and defence. The last 2 games, there was precious little of this.

Players will miss chances, but not getting chances and/or making the right movements is a bit of a concern.
Yeah that's the first challenge for him as far as i'm concerned. That's why I wasn't overly happy hearing him talk about wanting to go the World Cup and doing everything he can to get there etc. I'd like him to just focus on improving his base level so that he's consistently performing at a decent level for a full 90 minutes on a regular basis, once he can do that then the other stuff can come.

i mean there are plenty of young players who don't need time

how much time do you give him

does Haaland need time?

does Jude Bellingham need time?

anthony at man utd is only a year older than him

before you know it he will 29 years old and people will be saying he still needs more time
Barkley is still in the "potential" bracket too.

Yes all very true.

The thing with Foden is, at the same age as Gordon, he had never scored more than 9 league goals in a season. Conceivably Gordon could match that, in a much poorer team.

As for Gordon, if he gives us what Coleman and to a degree Osman gave us, that would be excellent. Both were/are fantastic servants. Just because a player isnt Rooney, doesnt mean they dont have a value.
If we get 9 from Anthony Gordon this season, that would probably make him our leading goal scorer and we would all have to be delighted with that. Unfortunately, I feel that he will be doing well to get 6 league goals this season.

Yes that's fair.

Theres a broader point to that, that I mentioned yesterday which is there have been a lot of factors that are setting him up for a fall. The club turning down a big offer (and making a big thing of it for their own ends), the manager talking him up, taking the number 10 shirt etc. The stuff about the England squad just adds to it.

I know theres a legitimate position about confidence, which is a good thing, but that sort of stuff just adds pressure, and potentially unnecessary pressure. I know most if the above arent on him, but the England comments are. I'd rather he didnt put that additional pressure on himself currently.

Sounds like he's been given a good dressing down by Frank over his five yellow cards so far, and very rightly so. Absolute disgrace for a winger to get five in nine games. I'd suggest most wingers don't even get too many more than five yellow cards across an entire season.

Last season Demarai Gray picked up three yellows. And if we're looking at similar like-for-like (fast, direct) players, Harvey Barnes picked up two yellows, Wilf Zaha got four and Jarrod Bowen got six. Not going to pick Sky six players as we all know they get massively favoured decisions by the officials.

Five in nine games? Disgusting. Should have taken Chelsea's £30m offer or whatever was on the table.
