Antolin Alcaraz

It is slipping up against "the likes of Burnley" that can make the difference between finishing 4th and not.
It's a squad game at the top end of the table mate. I have no problem with Alcaraz being in the squad - he's the 4th choice CB, he's paid 4th choice CB money, he plays to a 4th choice CB standard. Play him against the right opponents and we'll win - like we did today.

Play him against the wrong opponents however, and we'll struggle. There's a jolly good reason RM didn't pick him to play against Lille: Origi would have exposed his lack of pace and comprehensively humped him a la Sturridge and Suarez in the Derby last year.

Your 4th choice CB needs to be good for ten or twelve starts per season. Alcaraz makes that grade for us. At a lesser team, like Newcastle or Swansea, he'd possibly make the grade as one of the starting CB pair.... but don't we have greater ambitions than clubs of that type?

I actually think he is better than average for a 4th choice CB, Liverpool have Kole Toure for example.

But agree about his issues with pace which is why imo he's better playing with Coleman to his side and Mccarthy ahead of him vs Baines/Barry who aren't as quick.

Thought he did OK today, one or two mistakes, but then again, Jags made at least one howler.

One thing I do like about him, if he's under pressure, he's not afraid to boot it into the stands. Howard rolled or kicked the ball out to him at one point without getting enough on it and he was immediately under pressure so he just launched it into Row Z. There's a time for trying to play yourself out of trouble and there's a time for safety first.

Still terrified of what a top striker would do to him, not fast enough or physical enough, emergency cover only for my view, need another cb in jan if distin cant stop the apparwnt meltdown of his career
Yep. He'd be annihilated by a striker with great mobility.

We need a cb, but I have no faith in Everton coughing up for one in January.

I think it's a case of horses for courses, he can do a job in certain fixtures and Distin will come in for other games. When stones is fit, he'll be in ahead of both of them (imo).

Not sure if Rm has raised expectations to ridiculous levels, but the way Alcaraz coped with a swirling gale and a lack of hold up play from the likes of Rom and Ossie - plus his lack of game time over 12 months - leaves nothing to criticise. Maybe we should get a Skirtl or Evans to satisfy our new found mentality. He'll certainly do a better job than the ageing Distin until Stones returns
