I was making a point that in terms of judging a defender whether the team scored more goals then they let in (i.e did they lose more than two clear goals) is less useful a metric then how many goals they let in.

Say, hypothetically, wigan play two game one they lose 3-0 the other they win 19-18, by your definition the former is a drubbing and the latter isn't but the defending is likely to be worse on the one which you wouldn't count then the one you would.

The stats that are useful is the one you provided later.

"They conceded more than two only 9 times out of his 67 starts."

And I agree that makes him come over a lot better than i would have thought. As soon as you provided useful stats,I concede your point.

What happen your brain

Forget about stats. There's no consistency in stats. Stats don't disclose what kind of player he is. What happens on the training ground and matches declare that. I don't watch the game and think about stats. That's for people on sky sports analysing the game.

I can see where you're coming from. In reality though, I think losing by more than 2 goals is a fair definition for a drubbing. These 19-18 and 12-6 aren't too common are they. In a world where 1-0, 1-1 and 2-1 are the most common scores it works for a quick, arbitrary definition.

Agree that stats are not everything.
However, they do SUGGEST that Alcaraz is more decent than the general Wigan-defender, and that Heitinga is slighty worse than the general Everton-defender.

Both findings support my own personal opinion, so my only point really is that we are probably not worse off by signing Alcaraz and selling Heitinga. Time will tell though :)

IF we can sell heitinga. Which we haven't yet. And which we've been trying to do for two years.

Yes, that is my major concern. I did not rate Heitinga when he was player of the year even, think he got too much credit for "tv-tackles" and not enough criticism for poor marking. I just hope someone is silly enough to pay him his huge wages (bring on the turks and russians), I cannot stand the guy.

TBF, as someone who didn't want to sign Alcaraz my argument was never that heitinga is better but that I'd rather not play either of them and give Duffy or Stones a shot instead.

Now we are on to something. However, after a decade of Moyes, you have to forgive me for not considering such risky options ;)
Anyway, as a free transfer, I don't think it represents much risk, and if he doesn't work out, he will probably be sold to Rayo Vallecano for 1 mill. next summer :)

Statistics provide facts - they are the basis for any scientific analysis, but without extensive context they just aren't useful in football whatsoever.

Just gone on a Wigan forum to see their reaction to all these signings.

One lid on there reckons this fella is now our best defender.

Mental.

They go the match in fancy dress. I'd rather get Stevie wonders opinion of him.
