But our fullbacks do get forward

not when we are under pressure as we were too often once we were ahead away. if they did they seemed to be caught out more often than not. its a tactic not a suggestion for a total change in formation. Moyes didn't adapt to situations quickly enough. any indication new manager will is fine by me

considering how much possession we had in games though we still were very vulnerable at set pieces, and if one up away from home its not just a negative to put someone in who can allow full backs to break and also mean we don't have everyone back for corners

Against Fulham we had our whole team back and they still scored.

Its not about numbers, its about cutting out the individual mistakes.

Having 3 CBs wont improve our attacking and Coleman and Baines both have excellent engines and have no issue with getting up and down, im not sure what you even mean with regards the having everybody back for corners.

I havent seen the stats but would think that Baines and Coleman were probably in the top echelons of attacking fullbacks last year.

I agree that Moyes played the Moyes way, but to be fair Martinez played the Martinez way.

I see ZERO benefit in playing 3 CBs, nothing, why waste 3 players at the back?

Its not like we conceded a shed load of goals last Season, we actually conceded less than United and probably less than most of the League, cant be bothered to work it out. AF?

he didn't play it at swansea so i'm hopeful its just a case of, he felt he never had 2 good enough CB's at wigan to trust playing only 2

think this is my point to be honest, we threw numbers at the situation rather than tactics. we were on edge and full backs whose strength was to attack ended up stunted and not as effective. part of this was that we suddenly didn't look a threat on the break so teams attacked without fear

But I don't think Baines and Coleman were stunted.

Anyway on topic, Alcarez smells of fish.

Our full backs werent stunted, I think Baines had 1 of the highest assist rates in Europe.

Martinez will inherit a team that has two of the best attacking full back in the League. At Wigan he had Boyce and Figueroa playing in the full back positions. I think he'll stick with a back four.

He's not better in the air than Duffy.

I don't think RM would be signing him for his aerial ability anyway. He's a ball playing defender and I guess RM will be looking for us to play it out from the back on the ground a bit more. We lost possession too often last year when Jags lumped one his diagonal 60 yarders to Felli. Nice tactic to have, but all too predictable, so Alcaraz would provide that variety. All that said I don't think he is any better than what we have and not as good as we could get - so its a no from me.
