So, it looks as though this one is a certainty; player is out-of-contract at the former Club of our new manager where he featured regularly.

How would everyone feel about this signing?

Looking at the positives:

1. No transfer fee

2. Provides cover for the first team

3. Familiar with Martinez and his formation (should he choose to use it)

4. Experienced international (24 appearances for Paraguay)

5. Has Premier League experience

6. Played 90 minutes in a winning Cup Final team and kept a clean sheet

Looking at the negatives:

1. Wages and agents fees

2. Might stunt development of our young players (e.g. Duffy)

3. Turns 31 next month meaning little or no re-sale fee

4. Dodgy behavioural issues; banned for spitting at Richard Stearman in 2011

5. Was part of a defence who conceded 73 league goals last season

I think it's one of those where I wouldn't be that bothered if we signed him; never going to set the world alight, but I wouldn't be expecting him to do so. Thoughts?

I dont think wages will be too much of an issue. IF Heitinga finally goes, Alcaraz would possibly be on less than half of what Heitinga earns!.

And bringing Alcaraz in for a couple of seasons as 3rd choice would allow us to loan out Duffy for a full season to hopefully get games and aid his developement and not stunt his progression.

And Alcaraz was injured for a large part of last season, as was Ramis there new signing, who is decent by the way, and had those two been fit and able to form a good partnership, who knows what could of happened, they may of formed a solid partnership and helped keep Wigan up?!.

I know Alcaraz is 30, but for free, and cheapish wages and as 3rd choice, he'd be a good signing for a couple of seasons.

I see ZERO benefit in playing 3 CBs, nothing, why waste 3 players at the back?

Its not like we conceded a shed load of goals last Season, we actually conceded less than United and probably less than most of the League, cant be bothered to work it out. AF?

Exactly. Martinez played 3 at the back at Wigan and the formations 3-4-3, -3-5-2 to accomidate the personnel he had available at, and to try and stop shipping in goals.

With our players we can play a flat back four!. We played with 3 CB's a couple of times last season and didnt do great IMO. With attacking FB's like ours, you need to play a sitter in midfield to make up the numbers in defence when we commit bodies forward, and we have Felli and Gibbo who do that role nicely!.

Or if Felli goes, Gibbo sits alot and would give us the cover so we dont need to have 3 at the back and basically play with wing backs so when were attacking we automatically have 3 back defending, all we need is our 2 CB's and an holding midfielder.

Indeed, we should play this :

NetKeeper
Attacking Fullback - Stopper - Killer - Attacking Fullback
Sitter - Box to Boxer
Winger - Playmaker - Winger
Goal Smasher

He wasn't part of a defence that ocnceded 73 goals. He started 8 premier league games.... The worry is his fitness, not his ability. He also started the FA Cup final in which Wigan were superb.

Free transfer, proivdes cover, means we can sell Heitinga and use that cash elsewhere.

No brainer IMO

BUT GOAT MATE, YOUR ATTACKING FULLBACKS AND WINGERS WILL GET CROSSED WIRES. I SUGGEST YOU CHANGE YOUR WINGERS TO INSIDE FORWARD, MATE.

I wouldnt worry about him playing 3 at the back, he's already said he'll be playing very similar formation to what we've been playing.
