Antolin Alcaraz

Maybe im on my own here, but the derby, own goal and a couple of misplaced passes against City aside, I actually thought Alcaraz looked Class most of the games he played.

The Derby, he was the scapegoat for the hit and run that was a poor/bizarre 20 minute period which ended up being our worst result of the season.

This was in a defence that included himself and Jagielka, both having been injured for weeks prior, playing whilst not 100% fit so we could actually field a team.

A team that was also without Coleman, had Stones deputising, who had previously only played CB for us in the league, and Barkley, similar to Jagielka and Alcaraz, also playing despite being unfit and having been out for a number of games, all for the cause of the team.

And to make matters worse, we lost Lukaku in the build up to the 1st goal.

Don't get me wrong, that match was horrible to watch, and I actually stopped watching at 3-0 as my nerves couldn't take it anymore, but it was an absolute freak result, and was down to a number of factors, and can in no way be attributed to Alcaraz alone.

As a squad Player, i think he will be useful next year, especially if he can get a good preseason under him, and will be valuable in controlling possession in some of the European games. He is so composed on the ball and what he lacks in pace, he more than makes up for in positional sense and awareness, and his ability on the ball and in the air.

Let's see half a season or so with him consistently in the side, or used as a sub, before writing him off. There were people here writing off McCarthy before he'd kicked a ball. Give RM the benefit of the doubt and let Alcaraz show us what he can do before condemning him as not good enough. Oh, and don't get me started on how Naismith has shown his detractors to be wrong, wrong, wrong.

his world cup predictions, predicted chile to do well in a bad group for them they just beat spain 2-0
most detailed and in-depth of them all and seems like he is really intellegent, makes you wonder why he has been in the prem 4 years and still doesn't speak english

I like him, he did the job Heitinga did, for 1/4 the price.

You need experience, and he has that.
I'm inclined to agree, but would add that he doesn't cop out of 50/50 challenges like Heitinga did.

He's not the best defender we have, but he is good for squad depth which we will need for Europe.

I feel he gets a lot of unfair stick for the Anfield derby, and people conveniently forget that the entire team had a wobble and not just him.

I've seen him do a few interview in English like his intro one but guess he just feels more comfortable getting across more complex ideas in his native language.

In most of them he has had a beaming smile, seems very good natured and as you say intelligent. Don't hink he'll sulk about being used as a sub like Heitinga did.

I hope so I quite like him as a defender, sometimes prone to backing off like heitingha but that is infrequent, but he and stones excite me when on the ball which is something you can't really say for a defender, with insight like that and can express it very very well he may just have as big an impact on our young defenders as Distin and jagielka with his knowledge on what to do when we have the ball

I would be very surprised if his native language is not Guarani and his second is Spanish.

If we are starting to criticise lads for their linguistic abilities on their third language, we are looking for Philippe Senderos again?

I doesn't matter whether he's a good defender or not. He's never fit!! Has he managed more than 10 games over the last 2 or 3 seasons? I don't think he has...which tbh makes him pretty useless to us.

To be fair he's not a first choice defender so the numbers for last year are pretty meaningless unless you also count the games he was fit but wasn't selected for.
