Apologise to Southgate

He is what we thought he was.

When England went forward, they looked the better side. When they sat back, they conceded.

Wrong lineup, wrong tactics. Longer spells of pressure probably yield additional goals, and deny Spain their own opportunities.
Someone said to me last night, he has brought his career as a defender into his managerial career, and it had me thinking.

He'll suit Utd very well.
Bang average manager who was too loyal and too reactive

Eddie Howe will be the next cab off the rank

This, really.

He’s done a lot of good things, but that was just clueless last night.

I would LOVE to see what Carlo would do with this lot - win a pot, probably.

Unfortunately, he’s the same odds as Sean Dyche to be the next man - 66-1.

I think Potter will be more of the same, ultimately; this England job is more similar to the Chelsea one that he flubbed than the Brighton one he was quite good at.

….his teams can rarely mount long periods of sustained pressure and dominance regardless of opposition. They are difficult to beat but they also struggle to win games and often fall behind. Results are close, be it Spain or Slovakia.

Suggests to me that it’s tactical rather than a lack of quality.
It's also common sense as this is as close to a golden generation you'll ever get, no idea how anyone would think quality is the issue.

He's built some great team spirit for sure, but lacks the nous when it matters ultimately. You can't win on good vibes alone.

Is that Luis de la Fuente's son?

Cuz Luis has two league titles as a player and won the nations league with Spain last year, as well as a few trophies with the U21/U19 outfits.
Sorry meant Luis. Yes but I was replying to a post dismissing Potter as England managers because his highest league position in the PL is 9th. Which is irrelevant IMO as de la fuente proved. And Scaloni is another example

Saw a pro active manager against a non pro active manager last night. This tournament will for me be remembered for his trippier on the left madness and harry kane. England got through against the netherlands because of that run from olly watkins. Kane wouldnt have made that run. He would have stood there. Waited for the ball, and hit the deck looking for a free kick. That was kanes tournament. Diving looking for free kicks. Watkins isnt brilliant but he offered himself for passes by getting defenders turning.
Spluttered their way through to the final but they had a chance last night. Germany and even woeful france when attacking spain showed they do panic. Its just if you could keep them out the other end
Southgate handed over a large part of that game last night starting kane. And the whole country knew kane was shot to bits.

Tbh both of their blueprints were Southgate's too - youth team(s) manager being given the first team. Realistically it's not a bad practice or anything as it's someone who's a known face and all; problem was Southgate is inept tactically for the higher levels - absolutely no problems going through qualifications and all, but any time a manager with actual tactical nous comes up and England look lost.

Scaloni and de la Fuente have proven that this works obviously, as have others, but you also need to work hard after this, not just be everyone's mate - make the hard calls, play to everyone's strengths, and so on. For example, Le Normand hadn't really played, but his partnership with Laporte was great recently and they're allegedly mates as well, so he picked those. Equivalent would be Tarks + Branthwaite, as they're a strong core together with Pickford.

Oh and also selecting a left back to play left back - Luke Shaw is not the only English LB in the world for gods sake, why shoehorn a RB there in the first place?!

Taking off Mainoo and letting Rice (who stunk the tournament out) play in midfield on his own was what lost England the game. Gave up any semblance of control from that point on and could barely get the ball back. Spain must’ve had 90% possession in between the equaliser and the winner.

Well done Spain.

Southgate out.

I'm still absolutely surprised we didn't see TRENT in midfield last night to be honest.
