Apologise to Southgate

I'm sure had he met the same calibre of teams he met en route to those finals he might well have done. Unfortunately, even the most fortunate of managers have to play good teams eventually. His record against top 10 teams in the FIFA rankings is really bad. He's gotten away with it because he's blessed with extremely kind draws in the tournaments he's coached that has meant by the time we face/lose to the first decent team, we've gone quite far.

Even the Italy side that we played in the Euro 2020 final were not a great team, they failed to qualify for the two tournaments either side of it and we did the double over them in qualifying for this tournament. That counts as one of the games I’d expect us to win, I’ll always believe we lost that game because of Southgate.

Sometimes you reduce risk by putting the opponents defence under pressure. Most english coaches don’t believe in that though

This is something that Potter believes in. His teams are possession heavy and press high, rather than sit deep in a low block and invite pressure. That is an outdated tactic that relies on an exceptionally tight defensive unit and also a helping of luck. We have defenders that are prone to losing concentration, which means that ultimately a good team will pick the lock eventually.

That Spain winner had been coming pretty much since we equalised, we were all waiting for it. If we’d been more aggressive after the equaliser rather than dropping back and conceding the ball to them, who knows.

This Spain team would comfortably beat that Italy team. 2021 was by far England's biggest chance and they blew it because the manager decided to sit on a 1-0 scoreline

I mean if you go by the FIFA rankings, England is currently 5th, versus 8th for Spain. You may well argue that they're an arse, but as a heuristic, I suspect we seldom beat teams that were above us in those rankings.

This is true, but his record is about half as successful as someone like Roy Hodgson and Glenn Hoddle. A bit of luck goes a long way.
You make your own luck by winning your group which Hodgson and Hoddle failed to do. Even the group that Southgate didn’t win, it was clear before the last game that second place was better and neither team really wanted to win that last game. I can get on board with Southgate being no better than Eriksson but not having that Hodgson and Hoddle were better

Let’s be honest, we wouldn’t have beaten Belgium in 2018 even if we wanted to finish top of the group.

This Spain team is made up primarily of player who play europa league football.

They are an above average team who have benefited from the two best squads being managed by utter negative dinosaurs.

England or France should be well beating them with the squads they have. Especially with Rodri off the pitch for half the game.

They're also a team of good players who know how they all play and have the same camaraderie Southgate's being praised for, but also an actual manager who knows tactics and plays players in their positions so he gets the best out of them.

Considering the talent in the England squad - the exact same way Spain set up to play would make England walk any tournament; the personnel is there and even better, the management is nonexistent and only knows to bang on about the team spirit.

Think England fans overrate the players cos they believe the premier league is the centre of the universe tbh and have done for the last 25 odd years.

Maybe we just actually have a fairly average side apart from a couple of players.

That argument is dated now.

Only have to look at Bellingham and Kane, where they played last season and what they delivered.

Factor in 2 finals on the spin and it makes the shout of England just over hyped by own fans as a nonsense really.

Evidently they're a very good team.
