Apologise to Southgate

What could the reasons be do you reckon? The reasons that it keeps happening tournament after tournament, against different teams? There definitely is a reason for it, I’m just trying to tease it out of you.
Again, I’m not saying Southgate is a particularly great manager. Does some things well and a lot of things badly. International managers are generally poor in my opinion.
He still took the team to the final even with a lucky draw and has been close to winning this twice now and has done far better than any of his predecessors.

So Southgate is the reason? I agree.

They're also a team of good players who know how they all play and have the same camaraderie Southgate's being praised for, but also an actual manager who knows tactics and plays players in their positions so he gets the best out of them.

Considering the talent in the England squad - the exact same way Spain set up to play would make England walk any tournament; the personnel is there and even better, the management is nonexistent and only knows to bang on about the team spirit.
Spain played fast, incisive two-three passes and they were already in front of goal.
England is top heavy and absolutely lack technique and passing range in midfield to pull that kind of game, even Spanish subs like Zubimendi are so technically proficient, its just their style.

Who gonna do stuff like that for England, Rice who constantly passing the ball backwards, Gallagher another "safety first" type of player, i mean who else.
Great attackers with average as feck midfield and defense with goalie who cant pass the ball (something so important in modern game).

We have a player in that mould in Mainoo, and the manager decided to take him off and let Rice play in midfield on his own. We also had another play in that mould in Adam Wharton on the bench, unused.

Maybe they are the one for the future, certainly need more progressive manager.

But its so obvious your weakness lies in midfield and lack of passing range and technique, you simply can't control the games for long periods, it was same vs Italy in 2021 when Jorginho and company run rings around you in most of the game, same in 2018 vs us, similar even when you playing Serbia, Denmark and teams from that category.

No surprise your best game on tournament was vs Netherlands, team that lost all their best midfielders to injuries before Euro and was absolutely lacking there.

I’d say the fans overrate the players and the team’s chances. Southgate has created a squad that seems free from cliques.
Makes questionable choices and team selection but on the whole, is getting more grief than seems warranted.

It’s a lazy argument. I could easily suggest that you overrate everyone else’s players. What superstars do Spain have in their team? Most of our players have won more than their counterparts for Spain and play regularly in much better club sides. Lazy argument that absolves the manager of responsibility and also fails to look at games with a nuanced perspective.

Indeed. Southgate had zero intention of getting on the front foot from the off.

Plus Carragher is blaming the players for freezing and calling for Southgate to stay. Koff Carragher, don't ruin my Graham Potter filled future.

It suits Carragher for Southgate to stay so he can continue to laugh with his “scouse not English” Twitter mates, just like it suited him to defend the Everton board last year when they were throwing the fans under the bus. He’s an absolute disgrace and shouldn’t even be in a job himself after spitting at a child.
