Apologise to Southgate

The English way. Reward mediocrity. If we lose (as a result of his decisions, like the last final), he should go.
Two finals isn’t mediocrity. The big elephant in the room is just the reality that the paths he’s been given to both of those finals has been absurdly easy compared to what a normal path is, and he’s seen some silly luck during those matches as well. Odds that happens again in 2026 is slim. Typically when he’s run into an actual top side he’s lost…But that can change with a win over Spain.

England fans saying a Manager who’s got them to two finals ain’t good enough is quite some entitlement.

The FA and the players back him and I’d say they know a little more than ThreeLionsSmallTown66 on the internet.

You’ll get what you deserve then lads, and check out England’s tournament history before Southgate.

Would you replace Dyche with Southgate?
I don't think anybody would. Not after Slovakia or Switzerland and one decent performance against the Dutch.

If we had lost to the Netherlands we would have had people saying 'See, I told you, as soon as you meet a decent team you lose'.

Of course, now the narrative is 'The Netherlands are not a decent team'. Spin, spin and more spin.
They're half decent but Memphis Depay starting up front and bringing on Wout Wieghorst doesn't exactly scream golden generation. The midfield isn't exactly brilliant either. That said I don't have the issues some have with Southgate but he has clearly rode his luck.

It's a tournament at the end of a season, there really doesn't seem to be a break from football and there's not a great deal of time to get together and work on patterns of play etc. Being fairly solid and giving a platform for an individual moment or two to make the difference is not a terrible approach and having 5 subs changes things in that the starting XI is no longer the be all and end all.

For all the praise even Spain have looked pretty poor in spells of play and also rode their luck against France at times.

Would like him to be a bit more ruthless in terms of playing clearly unfit players like Kane and use those subs more proactively.

Like some Everton fans, the mantra towards any manager now seems to be ‘win every game or gtfo’. The modern fan is no better than the ancient pleb watching a gladiator battle whining that they want to be entertained

Southgate understands a few key indicators of success in international football that the media and England fans don’t seem to understand (it’s almost as if he’s managed multiple tournaments at u21 level and senior level compared to just sending hysterical tweets on a result by result basis)

Teams that win tournaments tend to have a solid defence. ‘But why isn’t TTTrrreeent starting’, why is Tripper playing, why won’t he play all of x,y,z in attacking positions. Southgate knows that even the best teams win knockout games by the slightest of margins. The World Cup winners from 2006 onwards all had solid defences, you didn’t see many flying fullbacks, or CBs roaming into midfield, France had 4 CBs lined up, Spain was probably the most boring winner I’ve ever seen,

Teams that win tournaments don’t change their lineup every game. When Spain lost the first game in 2010 they didn’t drop all their players. The top teams go for continuity even when results and performances aren’t there. Every time England don’t win a game the media and fans want half the team swapping out. Southgate gets called boring for sticking with the same players but it’s what good teams do.

Southgate doesn’t let the media pick the team. If he had done in 2018 Pickford wouldn’t have played for England, Rooney would have been chugging around in that tournament, Henderson and Alexander Arnold would have made every single team possible. The best thing Southgate did in 2018 was smash up Hodgson’s cosy sky six set up. Selecting players from Leicester Everton Newcastle Palace West Ham Villa to play in Englands first team is a huge reason the squad is bonding rather than sitting on separate Liverpool Chelsea and United tables.

Teams that win tournaments tend to save their best football for late in tournament and edge games late. I’ve never seen any team win a tournament trying to press like mad from group game 1. A slower more boring lower block style is the same style Spain France Argentina Italy all won the World Cup playing. Portugal did it in the euros too. There’s no point battering teams 5-0 in the group if you’re gassed when it comes to the knockouts. We’ve all seen exhausted England teams go out early complaining of heat and lack of fitness or being empty when it gets to pens. Southgate’s teams edge big games because he knows all this.

He’s there to get through tournaments not entertain over entitled football manager divvy fans.

*salutes... Spot on that lid.

Although if we lose tomorrow I'll be putting my Spain flag on the chimney breast, shouting he should have made 'Trent' captain, and that we should have got Klopp in after the Slovenia game.

Interestingly, regarding all the talk of lucky draws, the differences in world rankings between Englands and Spain’s opponents leading up to the final has actually been pretty small
