Arouna Kone

Two goals against League Two Yeovil and it appears as if people are being all sympathetic and googly-eyed about Koné once again.

Very similar to his hat-trick performance last season against a woeful Sunderland, which I myself may have been slightly guilty of.

He may have a charm about him, try hard and be able to hold the ball up well, however it is obvious that he simply isn't the standard we need.

If we haven't brought genuine competition for Rom and start with Koné as our second striker once the window closes, it'll be embarrassing.

You can think he's not really good enough whilst also trying to be positive about a decent lad who gets too much stick.

Like I said, as third choice or if he moves on, I'll wish him all the best. Stracq was bloody awful and had 1/10th the ability Kone has (not saying much I know), and yet he got little but love from the fanbase. I just don't enjoy "whipping boys" as a poster above put it, unless they're bells like McGeady who don't put the effort in and would rather rot in the reserves than go out on loan or get themselves into a physical state to be in contention. Kone certainly can't be accused of any of that, so he doesn't deserve the nastiness he often gets.

he doesn't deserve the abuse he gets but he isn't good enough for us.

If it came across as if I was intending to be overly anti-Koné as an individual then I sincerely apologise, as I'm actually far from it.

Originally, I was a firm advocate of giving him time when he was injured and always hoped he'd turn out as a viable option for us under Martinez.

Credit where credit is due as well, he performed well last night with a good strike and then good movement and a deft finish in the box.

Nevertheless, my point was that regardless of his positives I simply do not see him as a suitable option for us any more in competitive games.

If we're to progress he certainly shouldn't be second choice and I still have concerns whether he's a suitable third choice option if to challenge.

I worry that sentiment and a few select performances will somehow warrant him as a viable medium term option, which for me he isn't.

When you look at other squads of a similar (or even lower stature), we really do look strength in depth in this area.

theres one team that would suit arouna kone down to the ground...

WIGAN.

for the record, im not anti-kone. he does his job OK for us. however OK was the martinez era, we now need or at least, we are looking, for GAME CHANGERS, esp upfront.

still think this boy has goaals in abundance given the right service !

The way he tried to be all fancy on the wing against Spurs and ultimately ended up kicking it out for a goal kick summed him up as as footballer.
