Ashley Williams

None of them were aimless though - that was my point.

As I said, our first chance came from a pass from Williams.

The others were clearances up field... Kind of what we need defenders to do

Sorry, but you are totally wrong. They were aimless punts upfield. I am not saying it is the end of the world but it could easily be improved upon.

He basically gets the ball and hoofs it up field 3 or 4 times, a long way from any one in a blue shirt.

There's a big difference between a clearance and an aimless punt though mate, is my point.

I'm sorry, but I can't see - how after the amount of crap we went through with useless passing from the back last year - why you're complaining.

Williams didn't do aimless punts under Rodgers' at Swansea - so it's obviously Koeman's instruction to get the ball upfield as quickly as possible, and let our forwards do the work.

If Koeman's strategy is not to bend out of shape early doors the old guard who could cause trouble for him as they did for Martinez then I can understand him persevering with them for a while...as long as they're not obviously hopeless.

With Holgate, Funes Mori, Galloway at the club Jagileka for one has to be marking time though...and that's even before a possible last week purchase of another CB. His captaincy should not be allowed to complicate matters...Martinez made that error and it shouldn't be repeated.

On Baines: he's got an Indian Summer in him in theory, I suppose. And any natural predator for his position has been moved on in one way or another. I have a feeling his body isn't up to the task anymore though. I'd expect him to have long lay offs, at which point probably we'll have to move Mori over until a transfer window arrived so we could get our own back in again....which was why it was such a numb nuts decision to loan Galloway out in particular.
Excellent synopsis. I believe in the same almost to the last detail. Swan song for Bainsey great servant just hasn't the ability he once had. Strange about Galloway yes! but I have come to a better understanding lately, especially since the transfer window hasn't come to a close yet. Quiet moves may still be in the offering.

The Baines slating is remarkable and based on absolutely nothing. He's played very well in the opening games and looks sharper than he has in two years, fgs. He's only 31! He's got 2 years left at least.

Mate, I am not comparing it to, or complaining about last season to this, just pointing out that he needs to distribute his clearances better. It's all well and good getting the ball away upfield but, if it found a man (in blue) then even better. Surely even you cannot argue that point?!

I agree in principle but it's nit-picking for nit-picking's sake though mate...

As I said, a few of our chances came from those 'clearances'. I'm not advocating 'hoof ball', but to critique Williams for it is a bit daft tbh?

I could see him going to Serie A, Inter or Roma or somewhere. He worries me as a Premier League defender sometimes
Only been here a season mate.

Broke into the Argentina side and established himself as a first choice starter; winner of the Cope Libertadores (scoring in the final); has scored 4 times in 31 games for us (a better goal rate than Bolasie!). He's got a much better pedigree than Stones.

I honestly dont know what goes on in the thinking of some supporters that they see the progress of that lad and how short a time period he's been here, and think he's dispensable. I bet Ronald Koeman doesn't think so, not by a long chalk...as the church mouse will find out soon enough.
