Ashley Williams

Distin.. who you claim wasn't worth it because he was *too old* played over 200+ games for us and was consistently a good defender (a couple of mistakes mind you) and 33 games in our 72 point season. (I know you'll like that reference lad)

You've made yourself look silly with your opinion on Distin and discredited your frankly weak arguments against Ashley Williams' age.
Distin was a solid defender for us, Williams is a very good defender.

Gareth Barry has been our most consistent player the past two years and he is 35. Ashley Williams is a very solid premier league proven center back and is only 31 (though will turn 32 soon). I have no issue with Koeman bringing in a player he know will improve our starting 11 now. You can only rely on potential so long before you end up 11th

Will Ashley Williams improve our team in the short term? Yes

How many years of top level production can we expect from a 32 year old? Maybe 2 years if we're lucky

If he gets 4 million a year in wages and costs 10 million in transfer, is this quick fix bandaid worth 18 million for maybe 2 years of production with absolutely zero resale value? In my view, most likely no.

If we keep spending money on these types of players, Moshiri will be broke in a few years. This feels like a desperation move since our top targets are dragging their feet. Just because we have an influx of cash doesn't mean we should piss it away for old players who are more likely to fall apart than keep performing. Father time is undefeated. Defenders can last a little longer but 32 years old is about the time where they start getting worse. The chance that Williams will be one of the few that can last until 34 or 35 is very slim.
lets hope he does a distin, but more importantly, can we attract any better defenders talent and leadership wise, with a similar cash : years playing ratio? and in two years, if he is done, and everything goes to plan and we are top 6, we will have the enough cash, a good squad, and a better table position to attract high class, young cb's. more importantly, we will be able to hold onto the likes of galloway who could be the next stones. needless to say, if things dont go to plan, and we stay bottom half, moshis money has been wasted either way...

He's worth over £2billion...

And why not? No bad injury record, keeps himself extremely fit. Never relied on pace so no worry of him doing a Distin.

Got at least three years in him at the top level.

Good signing.

This times one million!

Williams could have another five years at this standard yet. He doesn't rely on pace, so we needn't worry about him slowing down, and it's quite clear he looks after himself and is physically in almost perfect shape.

10m for a player who'll easily give us three years of top service and potentially more? No brainer!

Hand the guy the armband.

All of a sudden lower their standards to pay £10 million for a B-list player who is approaching retirement.

Ridiculous. :coffee:

Close to retirement really? C'mon you must be taking the p*ss?

31 is not anywhere close to retirement for modern athletes. Most of the best and fittest go to their late 30's at peak or to at least 36.

Some of the greatest played at the highest level well into their 30's and with modern sports science more will continue to.

Yes he is 31 but you sign him keep him at peak and you get 4 solid years out of him that's good business.

I really hope you are trolling everyone.

Other wise you sound silly.

Got nothing against FIFA mate. He's right footed but more than capable of playing in a two or three - given RK's use of the 3-5-2 last year that may even be an option.

Best thing for me though is he is the type of player we have been lacking and will improve us.
wow, i usually get a horrible response when i mention fifa! but to be fair, fifa has extremely in depth statistics on every player world wide... a players rating on that game is made up of 50 odd statistics... sure its a game, but the stats, as well as the player rating upgrades from month to month really does help with player knoweledge across all leagues... seeing as im being completely honest, some of the statistics my son rattles off about our targets and their strengths, i think stevie walsh could learn some things off the kid hahahha

The same posters that spent the majority of last season saying 'not good enough'

etc etc etc

Bemoaning the standard of signings.

You need to go read some stats and look at the reaction of esteemed members of other teams that missed the boat. 'Signing of the summer' I have read more than once.

And that's enough on this subject and you attempting to derail by being a special snowflake. Ashley Williams will be a massive improvement for us and finally, someone to lead from the back.
