Ashley Williams

We are basically past the phase where we tell everyone we want to get into the top 4 and sign top players... they sadly dont see a career at Everton and would rather go to China it is purely a money decision... we are back in reality in the group of West Ham, Southampton and Stoke where we sign up whoever we can get with a proven premiership track record in our problem areas.

Williams is a good player ala Distint without his arial skills but with better distribution... however paying 10m for a 32 year old defender is exactly why all the money in the premiership will get subtup clubs like Everton nowhere. Signing overvalued british players from each other pushing prices up. imagine who Porto, BVB, Napoli could sign for 10m in defence? Guess someone will sign Scot Dann for the same amount Bayern paid for Hummels... (not that we could get him)

Our scouting stinks and managers are scared to sign the next Naisse that they won't take a chance on the next big thing fro Croatia, Denmark, Austria or some place like that and would rather buy proven track record that will never exceed mid table level from Swansea, Watford or Crystal Palace

I'm saying its not just STCC and FFP - but fundamental BUSINESS related.

When you start over paying for things.

That makes people lazy in business terms.

That is a trend we should not get into. Simple as that really.

So Man City, PSG, Barca, Madrid, Chelsea, United etc all have bad business models then?

Also as we have reportedly been willing to go to 42m for Koulibaly (outbidding chelsea to do so)
And to 25m for Witsel (outbidding Napoli, Juve and Chelsea to do so)

and on a fair few other targets we are trying to use money to make us more attractive by overpaying in relative terms for what other teams will do.

Then Moshiri has a bad business model and you disagree entirely with this strategy then mate?

Sorry but will take Moshiri's side on this mate over your business expertise running a hotdog stand

last bit was a joke btw i fully understand that you have run many succesful companies and have made a huge amount of money through being a very skilled and high powered entrepeneur

Not in his prime but look at the plusses- decent distribution, good at attacking balls in the air, blocking shots and leadership. Ok he's almost 32 but don't see no massive problem.
He was one of the best in the league last season, what's changed in 6 months?, he's got a couple of seasons still left in him at that standard, 31 is hardly knackers yard.

Mate, you've turned this from a discussion on the merits or lack thereof of signing Ashley Williams for £10 million

Into personal comments.

Can we stick to the topic please?

I fundamentally disagree with signing him at this price. I am entitled to my opinion.

Vincent Kompany @ 22 (2008) 8.8m

10 million is the new 2 million

PREMIER LEAGUE spending has spiralled in recent seasons, with an incredible £8.2million now the average price of a top flight transfer.

According to latest figures from transferleague.co.uk, the average price has grown from £2.3 million at the start of the millennium and has doubled from the £4.1 million figure recorded ten seasons ago.

However the remarkable £8.2million could inflate to as much as £9.3million by the end of the transfer window

Thank you.

Someone else understands my point. :coffee:

Its all a balance. £10 million is too much the other side for me.

I wouldn't say we are 'desperate'

Its only reported in the Sun and the Mirror.

But still. £10 million is madness.

Precisement.

I think it is down to a point. Koeman thinks our CB area is v weak and with Stones is moving on and Jags is starting to get injury proned he wants a short term quick fix who does not need time to adopt. It looks it will take time, if we are succeed, to get Koulibaly on board. Two weeks till kickoff I'll say we are short at the back and to get results we need signings. Williams may come as a form of short term painkiller who can do a job but I really doubt that is value for money cos he is 2 years younger than Jags. Just my opinion.

This is slightly knee-jerk to say the least! Our scouting network is undergoing a total overhaul and the head of it has literally just joined.

With regard to Williams, it can't hurt to have an experienced leader in the squad - something we have lacked in defence. And given the current fees that is not too bad, especially if we get 3 or 4 years out of him.
