Should atheists be allowed to celebrate Christmas?

Got in trouble today having Xmas lunch with the whole family.

My fam are old school devote Catholics.

Sitting around the table and I only caught the back end of a conversation they were having: '... The church is in trouble, I can't believe the priest did that!'

Of course they were talking about something innocuous like the priest and the parish council are having a minor disagreement over something silly.

Without even thinking, the first words that came out of my mouth (and I swear I wasn't trying to stir the pot like our good acquaintance @chicoazul is trying to do with this thread :p) were: 'Oh for goodness sake! Did he get caught diddling kids? FFS, how many this time?!'

Needless to say, I left lunch early...
You are my new hero for 2024.

I thought only i did that kind of thing.
Good man 🥃

…I’m not religious but I like the ideology of religion. The concept of helping others, being respectful seems the basis of most religions. I see the personal comfort of those who have ‘found god’ and how it helps them deal with life’s problems. Sadly, others interpret religious teachings in a different way.

Maybe you stop supporting Israel then?

Unlike Evertonians, atheists are manufactured, not born. My family wasn't religious at all and I became an atheist many years ago, but if believing in some unseen being floats your boat, fine by me. I would like nothing better than to skip the whole frigging Christmas week and all of the stress that comes with it. I just want to spend time with those I care about, but the pressure to go along with the gift-buying (and resulting overspending lest one be viewed as a cheapskate) can't be avoided. This time of year always wears on me.

I used to be an atheist, and I still don't really believe in anything. But if something makes someone find comfort, I'm happy to support that
Yeah I have absolutely no problem with people being religious and I think Richard Dawkins is a massive bellend. But I struggle to believe in it myself.

The way in which the world and the universe was formed does make me think there might be some kind of creative force behind everything though in some form or another

I'm not a believer but I like sitting in churches and listening to, say, the organist practising or the choir or whatever. The words and hymns are familiar too and it's an exercise in nostalgia really. I attended church or chapel a lot as a kid and it makes me happy to be in that zone again.

The organ is a brilliant instrument, I'd love to be able to play it

Which is a religion, to an extent

But anyway, people can believe in what they want as long as they don't encroach on others
It is a religion but not one that binds you to a strict belief system, just to what makes you happy/feel good about yourself without impeding others.

Which is your second sentence lol

But I didn't say it to push that on anyone, just funny really.
