Oh is he on that much? My mistake, reckoned if was more like 40. Sloppy research on my part.

He was no where near 35-40k per week at benfica mate, doubt he was on much more than 15k

I obviously don't know his Benfica wage, but I am sure Zenit flashed the big bucks at him and that's why he went there. No doubt he could have stayed in a decent league on good wages too, but decided on Russia and Zenit as they made him an amazing offer. That's how I see it anyway.

We don't have EL football never mind CL football, if we want to compete for players with the likes of Juventus and Napoli we need to be offering big wages as these players didnt grow up sitting in the boys pen or care for supping Chang in the park end.

Yes, but we cannot break the bank on wages for players like Witsel who, although better than McCarthy, wouldn't be joining us and automatically becoming our best and most important player. Thus, we cannot make players like him our top earner, as we'll then have Lukaku, Barkley, Stones (if he stays, as unlikely as that may be) knocking on the chairman's door demanding wage parity. Ideally we'll get players who haven't joined clubs on huge wages within the past few years and can instead offer than a moderate wage increase that stays within our future wage structure to tempt them into joining us, i.e. Carvalho from Portugal who quite clearly is currently earning far less than Witsel.
 
We really need to ditch this offer now as we are gonna look stupid. Once Pogba joins Utd, Juve will move for Brozovic from Inter, and that will allow Inter to buy Witsel and stay within FFP limits.

That's why he's hanging on in there - there is no way Zenit will let him see out the final year of his contract.

This is 100% how I see it panning out as well. Call it intuition, but I just can't see Witsel ever pulling on our shirt.

Let's cut out the middle man and go straight for Brozovic who is cheaper and better.

Agreed mate - and its not the end of the world. Just move onto the next one and find someone that does want to be here.

Hopefully in a couple of seasons time we will be where we all want us to be and he will look back with a bit of regret hidden somewhere in his mounds of cash that he could have been part of something special but wasn't.
