I'm just about old enough to remember the win in 87 & very very early memories of 84 (although probably due to oft used VHS tape recorded from TV)
I could understand the waiting till last minute under the kenwrIght era as we were poor. Surely there's benefit of bringing the big players in early, build up the hype preseason and start well? Thought we were rich?

At the time Russia was trying to make itself the next big thing in football, was a lot of money there at the time.

Think he's good myself, runs games for Belgium while keeping dembele out who imo was one of the best midfielders in the league last year. Miles better than anyone we have in there atm.

Not arsed on price, 25 mil isn't too bad for an international midfielder in today's game

Yes, it's gone on far too long. Won't be too disappointed if we don't get him, especially if we bring someone else in soon. But if we do, we do.

If he was a mercenary he would have signed for us weeks ago, it's fairly well established that we've offered the most lucrative contract to him, even all the Italian have said that none of their clubs can get close to the contract we have offered. That's pretty much the exact opposite of mercenary behaviour.
 

Would 25 million be an issue if he wasn't in the last year of his contract?

Seeing as though 25 million buys you Henderson lallana level players right now from an English club?
