Because of the threat of players being booked.

Gay and people from the LGBTQ community have been able to attend this world cup without any issues, given that they don't "publicly" display their homosexuality (could be displaying pride flags).

The very presentation of pride flags is seen as a blasphemous act by the Qataris and it goes against their faith, you don't believe that's somewhat disrespectful for fans to starting waving a pride flag, which is seen as blasphemous, around the stadiums in Qatar when there are most likely children and devout figures watching the game? If people feel like LGBTQ rights in Qatar need to be protested, it can be done in much more diplomatic channels without being outright disrespectful.

How would the UK like it if they hosted the world cup but at the same time, the Arab nations protested the drinking culture in the UK because it goes against their values?
If you think drinking alcohol and lgbt rights are comparable then you have serious problems.

This is an interesting development, if true. So what happens after the booking if Denmark refuse to remove it, is the next stage a red, so game abandoned? Very much looking forward to this one.

Think it’s Simon Kjaer who is captain.

Come on Denmark.

Really disappointed in the Netherlands last night, really thought they would make a gesture of solidarity, as inclusion and diversity is an important part of their culture.

After this I won’t be taking any of these leagues or FA inclusion campaigns seriously, this world cup will set football inclusion back decades, they’ve lost the crowd.

This is the first World Cup I won't have watched since 1962 (and I doubt there was much TV coverage back then).

This won't affect a thing but I'll feel, no matter how weak, that I've shown at least a token of support for Qatari LGBTQ + people.

One poster has noted that Western society still has a way to go in support for my community & this is true but tends to be in terms of public attitudes rather than laws.

FIFA and its insatiable hunt for money is one of the real villains in all of this. Qatar and its despicable medieval beliefs is the latest enabler of this lust for money.
A pair of rats feasting on the soulless corpse of what used to be the beautiful game.

Did you watch the Russia WC, the Argentina WC, the Chinese Olympics?

Pretty poor show all round.

Is the UK or the US all that different though? We've had folk trying to censure players for taking the knee at matches and for protesting racism more widely.

Of course it is different, the critique comes in the public sphere rather than threats of bookings etc.

Nor is the consequence as directly and immediately serious for an lgbqt person showing a public display of affection in Qatar, for example.

The conclusion I draw is that it is for these reasons 'wokery' is important. If folk couldn't call out appalling attitudes and values we'd have seen players imprisoned by Priti Patel and the Conservative government of anti-wokes, of that I'm certain. And that's the path to becoming a state like Qatar...

What about the institutional treatment of transgender people in this country? They're hounded by the commentariat in the MSM and are increasingly segregated by sports bodies into their own ghetto, and they face an uphill struggle to use certain public facilities like toilets and changing rooms.

I dont see the BBC and ITV giving that day to day coverage, do you?

Maybe get our own house in order then throw stones in the direction of FIFA?

Real odd stance to take. You know you can not agree with numerous things at once right?

It's called hypocrisy.

I think that's why the media are seething at Infantino: he held a mirror up to the critics and they had to look at their own societies...which are found wanting on many of the issues they criticise the Qataris for.

This is it Dave, we need more, poly-directional, 'wokery', not less.

Or our fundamental freedoms will be eroded by the right.

The Qatari's have waited right to the eve of the tournament to discard a lot of assurances and so have FIFA.

But dont think that the national associations of the competing teams didn't know that was going to happen. They did. They aren't daft. They sought in advance and never received any clarification on their intentions to wear armbands or for fans to be left alone to make their own personal statements.

They ALL colluded on that, including the media. The media are delighted those things happened because their role is to cause mayhem and sell their rubbish stories and push agendas.
Oh the irony.

I think it's spot on.

Will it be ok in the future if a football team wants to wear a fascist party armband to reflect who's in power in their country? The principle is the same: keep politics out of football.
Perhaps the question one could ask is - Is it necessary to always make sexuality a political issue instead of a humanity issue? Once you accept that discrimination exists you can accept Race Relations Act, Equal Rights for Women etc etc without any reservations.

It clearly is not the same as 1930s Nazi Salutes (whoever made them).

Only a matter of time before you popped up, you insufferable meff.

What harm would waving Pride flags do to those who aren't already gay? It doesn't persuade previously heterosexual people to suddenly bat for the other team. Argentina are playing today, have their flags suddenly turned a bunch of impressionable Qatari kids into coke sniffing handball merchants?
