Beer, revisited

wait, how did you get that?? I live in Richmond and used to be by there all the time.
It was on the website, but perhaps as you know, Basic City started in Waynesboro and I live about 30 minutes north of there outside of Harrisonburg, so I'm wondering if it was a Waynesboro-only release. But it appeared during the pandemic and I went down and picked up a case of it...it really is quite good in its own weird way. I love all their beers. I assume you've been to Vale? I really like their stuff too, but don't get to Richmond much.

The Veil? Yeah they're pretty good. The hype is through the roof with them constantly and I don't think they are even top 3 in Richmond. Triple crossing, Final Gravity and The Answer are the best ones in the city. Ardent is really good too in Richmond. Hell, Richmond has a disproportionate amount of fantastic breweries overall.

yes, Veil! And yes, they do get a lot of hype. I hadn't heard of "The Answer" but I have the others. Richmond has an amazing amount of good breweries...it's a cool city in my opinion...sort of hidden/overlooked but good food/beer scene.

Since lockdown I've been buying the odd 6 pack from a craft beer bar down the road. Hard getting used to the high ABVs. Had a half litre can of some IPA at 7.3%. Drank it like a normal can and was half cut.

I've got a 10% can of TIPA up next. Might just spread it out over the day.

I don't really know the first thing about craft beer other than that it tastes good more often than not. Can anyone recommend any websites or something to learn more about it? I want to be an expert by the time I come out of lockdown.

I never touch the stuff......

To be honest @Billy Dean there isn't really much more to any knowledge I have other than just being really into finding and trying new stuff, working in bars on and off for a long time and spending a brief period working in a brewery.

We use these guys to get a regular delivery of mixed ales every month:

They send mixed boxes and concentrate on a particular region or city each month, so one month you'll get a load from Colorado, the next a load from Barcelona. They send an excellent little magazine called Ferment with each box that talks you through the ales and wider ale news. There are plenty of similar sites.

The sadly departed Michael Jackson's website has crackin' reviews and a good primer on different beer styles:

I know what you mean about the high ABV. To my mind there are some brewers using high hop levels and strength to cover up some ropey beer while the current craze for 'American style' IPA's continues. This is both detrimental to our own bitter ale styles and a poor representation of the excellent diversity of America's craft scene.

There is definitely plenty of good craft beer out there that isn't high octane, I tend to favour malty/red ales. You'll likely find a style you prefer and gravitate towards that, but continue to try other types out of curiosity.

Essentially mate, there's no shortcut I'm afraid. You'll just have to drink a shed load of beer.

Happy to discuss all day long as you enjoy your new passion.

Been doing with San Miguel and Cloudy apple strongbow but seen on facebook a cracking bar down by the Wear are doing 1 bottles for £6 or 3ltr containers (with tap) for £18 of this stuff ... I'll be ordering some next week

Are you anywhere near Richmond? If so, take a day trip, order ahead, get some Richmond ones. We had 3 in the top 6 IPAs in the USA a year ago.

VBC has pretty good beer too tho! Damn craft thing is ruining every other version for me!
No mate nowhere near , I got a box of Virginian craft ales from Beer52.com . VBC, O’Connor, Port City Brewing.
