Beer, revisited

They were a LOT better about 5 years ago. I still have some of their Despot beers...actually I have a lot of their Despot beers from then. I'm not allowed ot buy any more stouts before I clean out my beer closet per my wife.
I had some of their 'Absolute Coup Of The Enlightened Despot Barrel Aged Imperial Stout' the other day. It was nice but I think I preferred the Heir Apparent. Supreme Leader will be getting necked at some point soon.

Yeah, they were a bit hit or miss from me. I haven't been out to their location yet, but it seems quite nice (as in the middle of nowhere nice).
It's a nice place but their beer is a bit above average for me. Some of their stuff they do pretty well but a lot of it is just middle of the road. But, and I can't stress this enough, they are in middle of NOWHERE. It's an interesting place to visit.

I should put a disclaimer they are not in the middle of NOWHERE like Hill Farmstead is but, in terms of the location, it's really off the normal path.

Living in France there is a dearth of good beers.........unless you like drinking Kronenbourg.!

Fortunately, my Belgium neighbour brings me a crate of 'Westvleteren' (Belgium Trappist beer) a couple of times a year. Westvleteren has been voted the best beer in the world and the most sought after. This is mainly due to the beer being only available to buy at the Abbey in Flanders and being limited to a crate of 24 bottles every 6 months! Not only that but you have to pre-arrange your visit and register your personal details and car licence plate, you are then given an appointment......you really have to like the beer!

The beer is good but, like most Belgium beers, it's strong ranging from 5.5% upto 10.2 % for Westvleteren 12. Personally, I prefer to drink more than a bottle or two of beer before collapsing so it's definately not a quaffing beer, more suitable for the' beer connoisseur'.............but at least it's not Kronenbourg!

I don’t know how Kronenburg is marketed in France, but in the U.K. it’s marketed as a premium beer, with a price tag to match.

The reality is, that it’s nasty, chemically, over priced headache gear, that destroys you the following day.

Westvleteren 8 is one of the best beers I’ve had.

In my part of France Kronenbourg is the ubiquitous draft beer sold in nearly every bar (and generally poor quality)............when we moved here 10 years ago it was 5 euros (500ml) a pint, which was an extortionate price back in 2010. In 2021 it's still 5 euros a pint but still undrinkable!! At least we now have a local bar, run by two young Brits, who manage to source local (and not so local) craft beers and refuse to serve Kronenbourg............

Before moving to France we lived in Hook Norton (Cotswolds) and had Hook Norton brewery in the village.........'Hooky Gold' is my all time favourite, only 4% but it's a beer you could drink and enjoy all night and not wake up wishing you hadn't!

All of the Hook Norton beers are really good, it’s just very rare to find anywhere in the North West that does it on draught.

My wife's American and on a visit back to Des Moines, Iowa we were in a local bar and found a bottle of Hooky Gold in their cold fridge.......the bar man had no idea how it got there nor how long it had been there...tasted great, especially after a diet of Bud Light!
I think you'll only find Hooky beers on draught in and around the Cotswolds but I know Morrisons and Sainburys used to stock bottles of Hooky?

Yeah, you can get the bottles around here, but very rarely the draught.

The bottled stuff is good though.
