Beer, revisited

Quite a few craft breweries are doing ESB, English porters and milds at the moment. I think the lack of pub is getting to them.

Have you had any Torrside beers? They do a lot of traditional styles. Lots of smoked beers too.

I haven't mate, I'll look into them.

I think someone mentioned that real ales don't have all the crap that the likes of Becks and all those other mass produced lagers have.

I read something a while ago about Bud, one of the head brewers said their main focus is for their beers to consistent. Whether it's a beer which was bottle 3 days ago or a beer which been on a warm dusty shelf in a corner shop for 3 years. It's impossible for that to be the same without something being added.

Fair enough I guess, I can see that argument.

Could that why mass produced larger are cheaper because the have a shorter life shelf?

They tend to have a longer shelf life tbh. They tend to be fine in general if it's can or. a brown bottle.

If you have ever bought a green bottle from an offy and it smells of weed, it is 'skunked' and has basically gone off. A green bottle lets the light in more which damages the beer over time.

It’s the opposite mate, the mass produced stuff lasts forever, as it’s packed full of chemicals.

A decent real ale on draught has a shelf life of 3-5 days, maybe a few days longer if you run it through a chiller, like Wetherspoons doe - hence why their draught ales always taste cold.

Germany have what’s called purity laws, which means that only natural products can go in their beers - no chemicals.

The banging hangover comes from the chemicals.

If you had a session on the likes of Warnsteiner, you’d be pissed as a fart, but no banging head and feeling sick in the morning, due to the fact it’s pure beer.

Ahh I see mate, so that's why you're run of the mill beers are cheaper because they can be on the shelf longer because of the chemicals.

My lad who is working at Morrisson's was saying that the likes of Perroni sells out quick because they only get a few pallets in, yet they have loads off Becks etc in the stores by the pallet full.

Their model is for it to be successfully mass produced, made to last with a consistency of (poor) taste to negate how it may be kept in terms of time and care.

Perroni, unless it's their red variety, is just a high-end, mass produced pile of piss that in reality is closer to the likes of Bud and Carling than it is to craft beers.

Beck's should be better than the likes of Perroni in terms of quality, but the issue is that it's just not a particularly nice lager.

Many moons' people ago I had Hook Norton mild, very nice it was, don't know if they still brew it.
Indeed they do.........Hooky Mild (see link below). Only 2.8% ABV though!

Didn't know you could still buy Mann's?..............I can the remember the 'Mann's does you the power of good advert'.......probably wouldn't be allowed now under guise of misleading advertising!
