Beer, revisited

If you ever find yourself in the beer black hole of Ayia Napa surrounded by naught but imported gammon lubricants and the local Keo (actually a not unpleasant local holiday 'lager lager lager') don't despair. Just up from the truly horrendous Footloose karaoke bar is the very new Brew Inc. This stylish tap for the brewery and bar in Larnaca has a superb range of cypriot craft ales on tap and a welcoming laid back vibe.

We got there really late and thought they might be about to close up but were welcomed for a couple of excellent brews. We started with a lovely amber ale, malt driven and beautifully balanced, this was an excellent beer.

The owner is rightly proud of the new venture and a very engaging host with an ambition to change beer culture in the party hub. As soon as we'd finished the ambers he sent over a couple of tasters of their ginger mead. This is a wonderfully refreshing, chilli infused ginger beer, light, slightly sweet but complex, would be a lovely sip with a Thai curry. We finished with a glass of the IPA, and its a cracker, a proper high malt, candy sweet classic IPA, not one of the endless US style hop bombs cluttering the market. Fantastic brew.

We wanted to head back the following night for a taste of the stout and a few of the other styles but sadly time was against us, but if you are on the southern coast of Cyprus do make an effort to visit one of the two sites. The owner has real passion for the art of brewing, ambitious plans and a fascinating story of how he came to the industry. What a find.

Last nights tipple :

GFB light amber ale 3.5% - Hop Back Brewery.

I‘ve never seen anything from Hop Back around by ours before and this was fantastic.

Light, zesty and really easy to drink. Stayed on it all night and no big head in the morning.

Drives me crazy that there is a distinctive lack of <4.5% ABV beers on tap here in America's microbrews. On some days I like to spend a few hours reading and sipping about 3-4 beers in a brewery, but this is a no-go if all the beers are 6.5% and above.

Sounds like a gap in the market to me...

I've googled this and found some articles to breweries and brewers who also share my conviction. There's a few places, unfortunately not near me though, that brew some "session" "all-day" beers, which are usually about 3.5% or so. Wish more would catch on here locally, but the trend at my local places are usually to have many >6.5% IPAs and then some non-alcoholic "beers" which cost almost as much as the pints of the real stuff.
