Beer, revisited

Funnily enough, I drove past it this week and was wondering what it was like ?
It's run by Big Chris of Pi, Phil etc. and his friend. There's a wide and great selection of ale, and it's kept very well. The surroundings are a bit odd.

It's like sitting in someone's living room, and I'm not talking metaphorically. It has a cream carpet and furniture you'd have in your house.

Stinking cold, so from what I could taste, very nice.

Don't often see a milk stout, with the above proviso, very nice indeed.

Couldn't try others, as the spirit was willing, but the body was buggered.

Question: what makes a good stout?

I had a lovely Oyster Stout in Rome the other day. Had a nice chocolatey taste to it. It only got 3.6 on Untappd but I thought it was ace. But it got me curious as to what you have to look for in good stout.

Craft beer and stouts is a mess these days, I'm going to rant, sorry

Most 'craft beer' stouts there days are a mess, particularly on untappd. People like stouts that are just a sweet mess, like some marshmallow crap at over 12%, it's the same people who like ipa's that taste like sunny delight and sours that taste like cheesecake. They all get 4+ on untappd by the babies

Obv I don't know the stout but my guess is a 7% bitter toasty export stout kind of thing and they are great

For my money, the perfect craft stouts:

All the non fruited stouts are flawless at low, mid and high strength

The fruited ones are great but obv not traditional

Cheers I'll check those out. The one I had was I think more around the 4% mark IIRC

There`s two problems that I`ve found with the flavoured stouts :

1. They are normally incredibly strong, so you can only drink one or two max, without falling over.
2. Because they`re so sweet, they make you feel full, really quickly and also if you drink a few, you can feel a bit queasy, so again, you can`t drink many.

I`m a big fan of what the Vocation brewery, have done with their stouts in cans, but I tend to treat their beers, as " the last one of the night " and will only have one before I go to bed.

I particularly like their Temptation Chocolate Stout 6.6%, which I`ll quite often have after I`ve had a decent meal, almost like a pudding wine.

They`re certainly not session beers.
