Heres you asking us to play on the, and I quote:

"Front foot"

Heres you now claiming Keane -- a player who CANT play in a team that wants to be on the front foot -- is competent.

No, he isnt.

Godfrey has been recovering from covid and played almost every game out of position.

Yeah ive seen Keane make numerous errors this season. Ive also just seen him fouling Antonio who held the ball up every time it was played to him alongside Keane.

Apparently that defensive masterclass got him motm lol

What I havent seen is Godfrey and Mina which is our best pairing.

You want to play front foot football and take the game to the opposition...then you play Godfrey.

Godfrey is by far the worst passer of our centre backs. I genuinely don't know what you've been watching this season.

The first couple of games were awful — my breathing — and I found myself fatiguing really early on in games, even after a single sprint when normally I’d back myself to be up and down,” he said.

“I’d be blowing in the first few minutes — it was mad… you can’t describe it unless you’ve experienced it. It was like you had someone else’s body. I’d make a sprint and it’d feel like I’d played 88 minutes, even though it was five minutes into a game.

“The past couple of games I’ve felt a lot better and more or less back to myself now, which has been good.”

Just seen those quotes from him, and honestly that's exactly how I've felt after COVID.

It really is indescribable unless you've been affected by it in a similar way, and everybody is different.

Just reading a piece in The Athletic now about it, how they were worried his heart had swollen at times.

COVID isn't just a respiratory disease, it's absolutely crazy.

Playing on the "front foot" to me means playing higher up the pitch, pushing forward and squeezing the oppositon.

This is something that favours both Godfrey and Digne of our defenders.

Name one game where weve played attacking football where Keane has been a standout?

First three games of this season where he gave goals away werent attacking but thats what we'll see if we play anything other than negative football.

On the one hand you want us to play on the front foot, on the other you want a centre back to play who gives goals away and is a massive liability when playing higher up the pitch.

Godfrey created a goal from a fantastic pass when he was fit...he's top quality.

Godfrey can't defend properly and is extremely vulnerable under the high ball. He's not ready to play centre half in this league and only time will tell if he will get there.

Amazing how obvious its been that hes not been himself + been played out of position to get his fitness back up.

He has to start next to Mina now and get an understanding going.

Im out. Thats one of the most stupid comments ive read on this forum, ever.

But you rate Keane.

Koff mate, youre wumming or just daft.

I'm not a huge Keane fan by any means, but I will always say what I see. Keane is a better defender than Godfrey and if you can't compete in the air then you will struggle in this league. Defending is a lot about combinations and Keane and Mina is by far our best combination. They are dominant in the air and that's very important given how so many teams play in this league. You need to be rock solid from set pieces and cross balls.

Godfrey has been extremely poor defensively this year, and if you think that is a controversial statement, then you have not watched us play this year. I believe that Godfrey was hyped up too quickly last season and the expectations on him are too great for a player who still has significant areas to work on defensively. He made a lot of errors for goals last season, and people got carried away because he's very committed in making challenges. That should be a given for any footballer, but it stood out more because of the lack of intensity from us last year.

He's currently not good enough to play centre back regularly in this league, but he might get there. Time will tell and I can't tell the future, so we'll see how he improves.

tbf this article has one of the experts on who has been advising clubs and he's said Everton have followed the right protocols.

I'm not sure on it but that's what he says. I don't trust our medical team as far as I could throw them, but that's nothing new mind.

The swelling of the heart is crazy, and a lot is made about heart rate too - they're using that as one of the key measurements for player recovery. I can only compare it to myself, and it's horrible. Just doing a ride that before I would be able to churn out in 90 minutes at a steady heart rate in the 130s, now takes me an extra 15 minutes with a heart rate in the 150s. Bloody three months on from COVID and nearly two months on from having my second jab.

I don't actually agree that Keane and Mina are our best combination, they're just the one that we end up using the most through circumstance so they're the most tested. But that combination has plenty of downsides I believe.

That being said, for right now, they are probably the ones we have to go with if we're playing deep. My argument with Godfrey is that we have to persist with him at CB because that's how he'll improve on his weaknesses. But due to circumstances with COVID and our shoddy recruitment, he was out of the side, struggling to regain fitness and then he has to be moved about to cover other areas of the defence.

He was possibly overhyped last year but his best attributes were - and still are - his physical ones. For any player to have those totally taken away from you in pretty much the space of a few weeks is going to hit hard.

I still believe his best performances from us were at left back. And that was because of his strong defensive work rate. I just don't see the attributes of a top centre half.

The aerial challenges are a big issue. He has to get much better at winning headers or I don't see how centre half is his best position.

I agree Tim but for that to happen he has to be playing in that position week-in, week-out.

If not, he'll end up as the defensive Tom Cleverley.

Ben has lots of good defensive attributes, especially the athletic, physical type but he has weaknesses also, heading for instance but that is why you try and have a good blend in a partnership. Mina and Godfrey on paper to me, looks the best but currently Godfrey is not quite up to speed. His pace and power of recovery are not to be sniffed at though.

That lab in Wuhan has a lot to answer for eh!

Hopefully Godfrey can get back to normal levels although I worry for him as he still looked knackered against West Ham.
