2022/23 Ben Godfrey

I think he gives Lampard options, he's not the best premier league defender you'll see, but, he's some athlete, he's very quick, has a great engine and is frightened of nothing. When played in a 3, with Tarkowski and Coady, their lack of pace benefits from Godfrey's speed. On the other side of the coin, their natural defending instincts allow them to help Godfrey through the game.

….I said at the time that the injury might be a blessing in disguise for him. Watching from the sidelines is good thinking time, especially given where he was in his Everton career.

He’s got all the physicality a top defender needs (perhaps not the strongest aerially) but as a forward you hate playing against blokes like him. They have powers of recovery so you never feel clear of them, they are tough as teak and hurt when they hit you.

Fingers crossed he can begin an upward spiral as I had high hopes for him.

Oh my days listen to yourself.

Edit; this is the part I'm referring to:

Jesus Christ.

A double leg break btw.

Loved him today, only question was his pace against Ake on that break, hopefully it was because he was knackered because he previously would have left him for dust.

Godfrey needs to get consistency like Coady and Tarks are. If that happens sooner rather than later we will be in a good place at the back.
Considering the length of time he has been out he seems to have settled quite quickly. Let us hope he adds the solidity we need at the back.
I think our only problems at the mo are lack of strikers and our wingers inabilities to offer much of a threat and lack of guile. Gray & Gordon although showing glimpses of talent have to be the most inconsistent in the division to our detriment. I would rather have a few steady eddies rather than the odd spectacular games that Gordon & Gray offer. Over to you Frank

I was surprised to see him given the role to disrupt Haaland rather than Tarkowski but he played it superbly. Well done to Ben and the coaching staff for the strategy.

Even if his role is limited to what we saw today he can still be a massive player for us. Tarkowski and Coady play every game in a two and then Godfrey comes in when we play three CBs. Keep developing Branthwaite behind those three and we may not need to further invest in the position yet outside of Coady made permanent.

I know Haaland got his goal, but hes been getting 2 a game at home. He had 2 chances from memory today. I would say it was probably one of Haalands hardest games hes had at the Etihad. I'm not saying Godfrey dominates him, but he was given a role, and made it into a really good competition, and dare I say it-rattled Haaland.

You can never knock his effort or application, and he will probably be really helped by the two CBs next to him. The run out of defence in the 2nd half was excellent and unlucky not to win us a free kick. So his best display since Carlo left for me.

Keown has been quoted as saying how good he is at man marking.

Could be used in that 'role/capacity' every game until season end to shackle the main opposition forward player.
