2024/25 Beto

I sort of assumed that all your talk of fantastic forward play was a bit tongue in cheek and so went along the same lines but maybe not. Like I said, my entire point was that i'm not being black and white about it - he has good points and can be useful for us, but he also has massive glaring weaknesses and I genuinely think anyone who suggests otherwise can only be on the wind up or have a very strange understanding of football. To use the example of our interplay from last night as evidence of how we don't need to hold the ball up, when our forward line had pass completions rates of between 40-60% and we had about 15% possession in the second half made me assume you were in the former camp.

Glad i can clarify mate, i do think hes played very well, not just 6 in 9, but in terms of dominating centre halfs and in creating/scoring chances himself with a lot to do in creating them - happy to clarify for you. Over his Everton career he has 1 in 2 in terms of starts and goals.

I think everyone has strengths and weakness, but id also suggest that as a fan group we are often conditioned into our one big man up front, who can hold it up an bring others into play and place a lot of weight on those attributes as good - people have different strengths and i think all can accept Betos are less of the former and more of the playing off the shoulder. Part of me likes that he is and brings something different and less telegraphed as an "Everton type forward".

You will forgive me for taking the stats with a pinch of salt away at Anfeild i wouldn't necessarily see them as a mean at this stage of team development under Moyes. I thought our counter play and transition yesterday was very good in phases particularly the first half, was particularly impressed with Charly and i liked the link ups between he and Beto. If I'm being honest i thought we created the best chances. Just my take.

I am not sure we are suddenly going to conjure a 15-20 goal a season striker on our budget.
Yes we need a striker but it may be one we need to develop further.
I would take Beto any day of the week over an injury prone DLC and a Broja who is made of glass. Chemiti might be an option but needs time to develop.
Beto for all his limitation gives you value for money. He is clearly capable of scoring 10 plus goals per season and would clearly be a useful squad player.

I reckon he is currently our best striker, but could be improved upon. For what it's worth, I would have him as first choice for the time being since he looks more likely to score than our other strikers. Chermiti is somebody whom I regard as having the potential to be a decent striker, but I don't think much of Broja - although he is a convenient option for placing pressure on an opposition back line at the end of matches, he doesn't seem to have much else about him. As for Calvert-Lewin, he remains side-lined with injury and likely won't play many games between now and the end of the season when his contract expires.

Looking beyond this season, I would like to see a decent striker bought in. It would be fantastic if we could land our own Ollie Watkins or Ivan Toney, but I reckon that would be difficult. I have mentioned those two strikers as they are examples of well-rounded strikers who have come up from the lower leagues and proven themselves in the Premier League. Beto could be a squad option for next season, but could well remain first choice depending on how things pan out, whilst Chermiti could go out on loan. These are all just possibilities, none of which are set in stone just yet.

Atm he is comfortably our best striker. Dom has been far too inconsistent, Chermo is still just getting started and Broja is really not much of a goalscorer as much as a support guy. Until we start getting actual service and crosses in, there are very few strikers that would make a bigger difference then him. If we don't fix the other positions first, then we probably will not get production out of anyone. Beto plays to our strengths the way we are currently set up and has given himself wiggle room. We would never have gotten to a 9 game unbeaten streak without him. Fix the other positions. Then worry about striker.

How much of it did he see? We weren't even stringing enough passes in midfield to get it up to him and kept just hitting it over the top in any direction hoping he would make something of it.
Anybody blaming Beto is reaching. He created our only actual chance because Doucore can't make a simple pass. And one inch further back on that offsides and he scores a spectacular goal. We deserve to sign another nothing striker. I fully expect to. It's the Niasse effect except Beto is a far better player. People think he is clumsy and base their opinion solely on how he looks on the ball. Hopefully Moyes isn't dumb enough to replace him with a less effective player simply because he has a comedy moment in him or two.

I'll say one thing about Beto, he's made Liverpool's two centre backs very uncomfortable twice in the past 5 weeks. Virgil and his mate don't fancy playing against him.
Let's forget that he causes trouble for one of the top defenders in the league. If it were a more sexy name, people would be moaning about the lack of service and ignore the fact that none of our other strikers actually get into the positions that Beto does or forces the issue. I would rather a player create something and give us a chance than a player that gets completely shut down all game. We haven't had a true goalscorer since Rom.
