Big Friedkin Rebuild

I think if no one signs a new contract, we will be down to 12 senior pros this summer. Hopefully a couple will be able to step up. But with PSR, we're going to have to still use the loan and free market. Going to be be a very interesting year, with manager and director of football out of contract.

I think its far more impossible to get a fee for a 32 year old Doucoure than it is for us to let him leave without taking the option to extend pal.

I know. It's because he really ought to be playing in League One, right?

I'm not in love with him. I've called him crap in the past and his best days are behind him. But he is not valueless in my view. He is three and a half years younger than Gueye. He has one more top flight contract in him, and his next destination will be in the top tier of whatever league he ends up playing in.

Does that mean we will get a fee for him? Not necessarily, but I don't think its anywhere near as far fetched as some people think it is. He remains a top flight quality player. He will have suitors, and they won't be Port Vale.

Stop exaggerating. There are worlds between "not good enough for Everton" and "only good enough for League one" the issue is most of those are not going to be teams who will pay money to buy out a 32 year olds contract.

It is his age profile rather than his quality which will prevent anyone buying him for a fee mate.

Gueye is an OAP as well who also, if you recall, came to us for basically nothing at 32 years old. Because people don't pay fees for 32 year old defensive mids.

I don't think we got Gueye on a free did we? We paid a fee and he's been in our first team ever since. People are talking about offering him his second contract extension in the summer. Gueye also made it very clear that he wanted to return to Everton and Everton only, if I remember it correctly.

I get it. He's over 30, so clubs will be reluctant to invest. But there is still scope for a sale in my view. Nobody would be surprised if Saudi came calling. Nobody would be that surprised if he ends up at Roma. He still has another few years of top flight football left in him.

I think it’s presumptive to talk about rebuilds just yet

We need to stay up first

Well surely that begins now? We have a LOT to do in the summer already; take a look at the “discussion points” of the original post: what do you think we can get done in January?

Regardless of division, we have 14 players returning to parent club / out of contract in the summer leaving us with 12 senior players. Yes we obviously need to stay up first, but if we doing nothing towards the plan for the future because of that is negligent.

loans and frees? behave
We'll either have to get some loans and frees or give new contracts to a handful of those who are going to be out of contract. We can't go out and pay proper money for 15 players in one summer, I'd much rather we spend some decent money on actual quality and then pad the squad out with cheaper options rather than dilute the quality by spreading the money around.

Can we attract real quality? I think it makes more sense to bet on younger talent and more so quantity than perceived quality.

PSR probably means we get little to nothing done for a couple of seasons

Right now it’s about getting in the right manager and improving on the youth set up so that we can develop our own players rather than having to buy them

We basically have to stay up with what we’ve got and then see what’s possible in the summer if we’re lucky enough to survive

We're not out of the PSR/FFP jungle yet sadly

If we get the head coach/managerial appointment correct, then hopefully we get someone who is willing to work directly with Thelwell and will actually have ways to maximise the players he does bring in, be that on the cheap or via the loan system

Right now Dyche and Thelwell seem to be on different pages as to how they want the squad to play and the personnel required for it. Thelwell is trying to find bargains, and even when he does he can't be sure that Dyche will actually use the players

Thelwell is staying at least for the short term, so he's going to need a manager who will actually work with him. We need the right tactical set up in order to get the most out of the players we do have, and a production line from the youth ranks of players who are good enough to bolster the squad when they come of age to do so

That's going to take years. In the short term it's about getting the absolute best of the players that we do have, which is probably why we need a new manager

There's going to be little in the way of a proper "rebuild" for quite a while yet because the PSR system won't allow us to do that, so we'll be relying on bargains, loans and youth in the short term until we can finally get our heads above water and be allowed to spend a bit again

I don't mean like Moshiri style statement signings. I have no idea what sort of market we'll be shopping in but using a kind of hybrid example from the past to show what I mean I would rather go down the route of spending £28m on Lukaku and getting Barry and Deulofeu on loan and Naismith and Cleverly on frees, rather than buy Kone, Jelavic, Funes Mori and Mirallas for the same sort of money.
