The popular theory regarding how Dean acquired the nickname Dixie is that he did so in his youth, perhaps due to his dark complexion and hair which bore a resemblance to people from the Southern United States.[2] However the Tranmere Rovers historian Gilbert Upton uncovered evidence that the name 'Dixie' is a corruption of his childhood knickname, Digsy - a name acquired from his approach to the children's game of tag, where Dean would dig his fist into the girl's back, hence 'Digsy'.

I dont know, he was racially abused during his career that's for sure. An Arsenal player called him something and was pulled up by Dean in no uncertain terms. If you have a look at any photo of him he doesn't look like any *native* Englishman I've ever seen. That's not a value judgement by the way, just saying he looks mixed race...which wouldn't exactly be a great surprise given that the port of Liverpool and surrounding areas was comoploitan by any English norms.

Seriously, though, Dixie probably was mixed race. I have no proof of that I'm just going off observation and anecdotal evidence. That's my honest opinion. Somewhere along the family line there must have been a cross race relationship. I suspect black Evertonians may think this also. It'd be interesting to hear what they think. I have to underline though, it really isn't an issue for me. I could give a flying one who played/plays for Everton.

If were talking about black Everton players - i would just like to add this if i may and going very slightly off...

"ohhhh Terry Phelan, dancing on the ceiling"

I was told we recently were the first team to have four different Black players score? It was in a text and I assumed he meant in the Premiership but still, was quite surprised.

I have heard this about Dixie. I'd really want more proof before I believed it because I'd be shouting it from the rooftop if true, even if he was of dual heritage. It wouldnt surprise me if he was a throw back from an earlier black / white liaision.

I just need a bit more proof, like a family photo as per Giggs, who I really didn't believe was of dual heritage until I saw the photo of his dad

Is that in one match, or in one season? In one Portsmouth game, save one whilte player, they almost played a totally black team. Now that would have been a first.

I can see what Mikel's getting at with his silly snipes, but when you're on the "other side" being accused of being crazy for supporting a racist team, and people telling you about "Everton are White", plus the fact that so few people of ethnic origin go to live Everton matches, it then becomes more serious, and relevant.

Hope that in your nonsense about gangster rap etc, you'll take that on board. And why does TX's point make the thread "null and void"?

Even if we used the term mixed race, dual heritage or black person, he was the FIRST to score a goal in the cup final, and he played for EVERTON - probably means nothing to you, but when fans in 1974 are chanting monkey noises every time Clyde Best touched the ball, and a young black Everton fan prayed to god that he scored against a team that he loved (he scored a hattrick on the latch's debut) - if you're even in that position let me know, then you might even begin to understand how important it is.

Stopped me from going to live games for 20 years.
