Boxing

Hard to beat the Fury of a few years back for turbo-cringe - non-ironically banging on with the bible autism about how women should be indentured servants, gays should be banned. Then he got busted for steroids. So a persona rethink was in order, which he's successfully done tbf - because his last one was AIDS, and we're now all big fans of the Gypsy King speaking his own mind.
Professional Boxer in "not most intelligent man in room" Shocker!
I imagine it is just down to the fact nobody argues with him because he's more mentalist than Derren Brown

And on AJ, as soon as some keeps mentioning they won Olympic medals for Boxing, I generally see them as having a sheltered career fighting bums and has-beens whether it is true or not. Boxers go to the Olympics to become a "Personality" rather than a better Boxer.

I don't think that Olympics comment is fair, a lot of lads/girls try to get into the GB squad because they know it gives them a bit of a platform. Galal Yafai and Lauren Price who both just won golds are hardly trying to be personalities. Lauren looks like she hates getting interviewed.

Being on team GB is a great platform. They earn somewhere around 30,000 a year plus sponsors and have 4 years to get to a level that puts them in a great position when they go pro. Usyks amateur career seems to have helped him.

Olympic medals having sheltered Careers?

If anything they are propelled into the limelight and forced to face the best earlier due to hype/purse/expectations.

Loma is the perfect example of that. Hes only had 2 fights that weren't world title fights?
Exactly, he might be a bit extreme and is obviously a supreme talent, but he turned over with an stella AM pedigree and was straight in with the wolves, fought for a world title in his second fight if I’m not mistake against Salido.

Usyk another gold medalist and look at his resume for 18 fights, unreal.

They are obviously exceptions to the rule but name me a gold medalist Olympian who has been brought along slow in normal terms, even Khan who was protected because of his chin and won a silver at 17 was a world champion in about 20 fights and fought a who’s who of his division.

Think it depends on the person and the personality of them Olympians. Any form of medalist from the Olympics does get a certain amount of hype but think they’ve also gotta have a big personality to be really pushed, especially in this country. It can also have an effect on that fighter. Look at Luke Campbell, great amateur but didn’t really have the style or power for the pros.

My opinion but think they’ve gotta be an entertaining fighter for the public to really take to them.

Biggest hype for an Olympian in this country I can remember is David Price. Rushed far to quickly and was been billed as the heir to the throne of the Klitschko dominance era.

You can look at a Joshua Buatsi, super talented, not been rushed but also been over hyped in a way.

Regardless though the comment was about Olympic gold medalist or mesdalist have sheltered careers what in reality it’s quiet the opposite. They are guided and the PR side of things but they are usually match a lot tougher a lot quicker.

Price was managed relatively ok until the Thompson fight which was a big step up from british level but you do have to question whether his stamina and chin would have got him to world level regardless of the route they decided to take. If you look at Joe Joyces career he has had much harder fights than Price did.

I wouldn't say Price was hugely hyped compared to AJ, Degale and Campbell.

Now that they score amateur fights by rounds rather than points you'll get more successful amateurs turning into professionals. Tom Stalker was an excellent points amateur but it didn't really work as a style in the pro ranks.

That’s bound to happen with the olympics though. It’s an event that is watched worldwide and profiles will be through the roof.

Different time period between Price and Joshua. Joshua came in to boxing with the social media era, Hearn using social media to promote him.

At that time, Boxing wasn’t on the level in this country for Price as it is now. Price was always over sky and boxing shows. Remember the ringside special when he went to Germany to commentate on a Klitschko fight and how he’d beat him and so on.

Price was more hyped than DeGale.

Difference between all the Olympians them compared to now. Is that they had to sign with Frank Warren and the likes, majority sign with Hearn who was on a bigger platform with Sky.

I think it is correct to say that Joshua has fought just about everyone in the division. The same couldn't be said for Fury and Wilder.
