Boxing

Just get watching and get reading HJ, boxing is also one of the best 'youtube' sports, some great fights on documentries you can read on there, and of course get yourself down a gym if you fancy it, nothing will give you a better insight than that, fantastic sport to be involved in

Spot on having a go will make a real difference but if you don't fancy it (or even if you do) just watch, listen and read. As said There is loads on YouTube so maybe think about fighters you like historically or have heard of or google 'top ten greatest boxers' or whatever then YouTube them and watch them in action & There are some great books on boxing (four kings for example is brilliant ) .

A lot of that historical obviously but it'll give you a understanding of the art & as we all know google and YouTube will take you from one to the next to the next.....if you are looking to improve ou knowledge of fighters out there if you've got sky ringside is ok , there are some decent blogs and online articles and I like the Steve bunce podcasts personally (I know a lot don't like him) which has some really good interviews and also gives an overview of amateur boxing as well.

haha he looked pretty gash on the pads for someone training day in day out with the mcguigans

I saw an 2 sec advert and like you thought he looked awful to be honest with you, certainly for a pro. It's clear flintoff is having a go and I'm sure I've read he did a bit as a kid and had a go at the training during his career. I think you have to admire anyone who pulls on the gloves but I don't like the idea it might turn into a circus and cheapen the sport. I think it's clear his first opponent will have been hand picked to lose it show he goes on from there , even on the very small clips I've seen I'd imagine it's end with him looking up at the ceiling probably after throwing a messy overhand right.

The boxing page on newsnow links to all kinds of boss boxing pages. Theres one good wesite I use boxingnews.com thats excellent for keeping track with who's fighting who and whats goin on behind the scenes. It's a fascinating sport full of characters, something football now lacks.

For me Flintoff might get 3-5 fights and a few quid out of what he's doing. The matchmakers will have thier work cut out finding pro's bad enough to make someone not fit enough to play cricket look a boxer.

For me Hatton will fight 2-3 fella's with decent records but no punch. If he looks good he'll get one last big go. I loved him first time round and he's got a lot of heart but his style of fighting, never mind his lifestyle, isn't conducive to boxing into your mid 30's. He's chasing ghosts IMO.

thats the key line for me, hes not so much exercising his demons, as putting them away in a cupboard for a few years, long term I fear for him

On top of what Sheeds said Harry, buy a boxing monthly mag if you have to take a train journey somewhere, Buncey writes in that, and I actually dont mind him in the written form, his knowledge of domestic boxing in Britain is pretty excellent really, especially when it comes to the old school characters. I've no long finished reading 'war, baby', Kevin Mitchell's book, which I loved for a lot of reasons, but really delves into boxing as a sport, the documentry on the same subject 'the fight of their lives' is also on youtube, It was the fight that got me into boxing, but strangely because of the outcome, reading the book and watching the documentry is the first time I've been able to revisit it since watching it live as a kid.

Another Book on Boxing I just finished is 'black Ajax', by george mcdonald fraser, it centres around the fights between Tom Molineaux and tom cribb way back in the day, but talks about so many great historical figures, and again is full of the richness of the fight game.

But if all thats not for you, like sheeds says, googke top tens and things like that, have a look at some of the great contests, Ali v Frazier, Vasquez v Marquez, Barrera v Morales an Ward v Gatti.

Even if he manages to get back to what he was at his best he'll be found out at the top level. It's no win for him in everything bar moolah.

Spot on this.

He couldn't beat Mayweather and Pacqiao at his absolute peak, he hasn't a prayer now.

This is purely postponing a Big Mac and cocaine fuelled breakdown/death.

What a way to go.

I can see him in a padded cell, the size of butterbean, talking about making another comeback and how don kings an alien, who ruined his career cos he hates man city and oasis.

BTW, is Butterbean the greatest name ever for a professional fighter?

Sugar Ray Butterbean would've been better.

Hatton's come back is poor judgement imo.

He was never a great boxer, he was only ever a spirited street brawler with a great heart & a decent chin.

His lifestyle had caught up with him when he was retired by Manny.

3 years, bucket loads of coke, ale & fry ups later, he's never going to be even as good as he was at the end of his career, let alone capable of being what he was at his peak. I hope he gets beaten tomorrow tbh, so that this ill fated comeback ends quickly.
