Boxing

Its a belter lad, was strange to rigondaux fighting in the undercard on sat, mad seeing them without the cuban vest.

When I was chatting about Stevenson, the convo started anout Tom Stalkers chances, so the more people getting into the boxing at the olympics the merrier, despite boxing looking like its going down the toilet, the amateur scene in this country is pretty healthy right now, I hope of few of the lids like yourself give the olympics a chance, its still a long way from what it was, but its getting better, and should be much better than beijing.

Stevenson's passing has reignited my ambition to go to Cuba, gonna have to get meself over there, check a few gyms out an that, might leave the gloves at home though!!

Yes mate, good point that. I've had nothing but apathy for the Olympics but the boxing will be sound. Will make a point now.

I lived in Cuba for a while, give me a shout if you need any pointers when you do go over there. The boxing gyms are nuts like. But they're dedicated and sincerely wonderful people for the most part.

I appreciate that mate I'll defo do that, might even drive past Kindelans house a few times in your honour, freak him out a bit!

weve got a real decent crop coming through at these olympics, wouldnt be at all suprised to see 3-4 medals for britain (i refuse to call the team gb!)

de la cruz in the light heavys is probs the pick of the current cubans, top fighter, lopez at lightweight is decent aswell though. I'm buzzing thinking about these cubans now, i wish i had some cigars handy to really get in the mood

Any time mate. Who's going to be worth looking out for with the British team? Callum Johnson is a mate of a mate so I was going to torture him but haven't had the chance.

Don't want to sound like a grandstanding [Poor language removed], but a Cuban mate dropped these off two months ago and I've still got four left.

I'll post one to you if you like in time for the Olympics.

haha light em up big man

If he hadnt turned pro I reckon Callum Johnson would be a shoe in the games, he's signed up with Naz hasnt he, been quite inactive i think?, but then I suppose Naz would have to move to sort his fights out, and given how unbelieveably fat he is now, thats a real issue. He was superb at the commonwealths though and i've been keepin an eye out for him, I like his style, all hooks an aggression.

Given the super heavies arnet that strong I'd be suprised if Anthony Joshua doesnt medal, got a great chance of winning it infact, the lads a talent. Welsh Andrew Selby has improved beyond all recognision in the last year, hes in with a great shout, as is Luke Campbell. Scouser Tom Stalker has a good shout at a medal at light welter, real nice lad aswell, red though. That jock Taylor is decent at lightwieght, but hes in a tough divison, and fred evans has an outside chance. Theres some real good fighters that didnt even qualify, most will probably turn pro, Joshua will make most of the headlines, being a heavy an that, but I'd say Selby could turn out to be the pick.

Yeah he's fighting for Hamed. Will try and get an update off my mate where its heading, he didn't turn pro til 26 I think so time isn't on his side. Great body shots with him and fights firmly on the front foot, you could tell he'd end up pro couldn't you?

Really appreciate the heads up mate. Ill pencil some of them fights in. Pleased theres plenty of talent. I used to go and watch the ABAs when I was younger so used to be a bit more informed. Pleased someone knows their stuff now like!

oh no doubt, he looked made for the pros like, heard he wasnt on good terms with mckracken an the elite squad or something aswell, so didnt expect him to hang round for 2012 like, be good to hear if hes got decent plans as the lads defo a talent.

no worries lad, bit of a geek for the boxing me like.

Bumping the boxing thread for Hattons comeback on Saturday

What are peoples thoughts now its a couple of days away, most people seem convinced its not for money (though the greedy fecker still signed with primetime).

Looking at these interviews coming up to the fight, I just think the guy is in denial, coming back isnt going to solve the problems he faced in retirement, just put them off for a bit longer, boxers arent singers, thers no farewell tour, when its over its over, get out and live your life.

Obviously we need to see how he looks but I'm worried as he was a fighter who was nowhere near in the best physical shape for most of his career even when he was fighting at the top level so I've no idea who he'll be know after the break and the 'lifestyle' he's apparently lived .

Any boxing fans there is an interview with carl Froch on the last BBC Steve Bunce podcast and it's well worth a listen and pretty informative about tactics and Froch's honesty is well worth a listen particularly talking about how he was well beaten by ward and the judges had it too close.

Haven`t seen what shape he`s in but he`s bound to be a shadow of his former self. If he needs the money then fair enough, but i think its a mistake aswell.

Just heard 2 mins of tonights radio 5 boxing special (I'll hopefully listen to it all tomorrow ) and mick Dennis who is no fool was less than glowing in his assessment of the shape/condition Hatton was in.

its a shame cos i used to like Ricky.Think he might Ruin his name.He certainly won`t improve it.

He looks in great shape but having a six pack doesn't mean you are in peak boxing condition.

I think he's just missed boxing and wants to have another crack at it. I wouldn't expect to see him back fighting Mayweather and Pacquao any time soon and if he does it will end worse than the first time.

I watched Ricky a lot and I enjoyed him in him early days especially but if I'm honest I lost a bit of respect for him towards the end of his career . My ex was cabin crew and loved her boxing and swapped to work a flight to Vegas for the manny fight , Ricky was as we all know battered but still managed to invite all the virgin crew girls and a lot more besides to a pool party where as I understand he was behaving very unlike a pro-boxer. Lads I know had laid 1000's to watch him but he seemed ill prepared and then went in a mad one. I'd be surprised if the lifestyle hadn't really cost Ricky but we'll have to wait and see and I'm not sure this first fight will answer the questions many of us have.

The reality is I don't want to see Ricky throw away his hard earned reputation but I really think that's exactly what'll happen.

I remember the day before the fight him telling people to bet their house on him winning, I know all boxers bluff, but he knew he had a bad training camp so maybe bluff in a way that doesnt encourage people to bet on you.

I always liked Hatton though, in an age where Boxing is very much in the background in sporting prestige, Ricky's fights, at least his title fights, always felt like a proper event, but as I've said, this comeback is like an extreme psychological therapy session, it could end in tears. This guy hes fighting, he might well get past him and look very good doing it, saw the fella training and his footwork is appalling, if he gets that jab going he may have some success though. But what comes after, unless he is back to Kosta tzsyu form, and barring a time machine how can he be, then Kell Brook could beat him handily, Mayweather would destroy him, cotto also, and heaven forbid we have to hear Amir Khan talk about how 'we' beat Hatton.
