England under-21s boss Gareth Southgate says Brendan Galloway's omission from the squad to face Kazakhstan was purely "tactical". The young Lions won 3-0 at Coventry's Ricoh Arena this evening to make it two wins from two in their Euro 2017 qualifying campaign. Galloway, who has represented England at u-17, u-18 and u-19 level, was hoping to make his u-21s' debut tonight after being forced to withdraw from the last round of internationals because of a knee injury.

But Southgate says he needed to pack his bench with attacking options and so was forced to have a 'difficult conversation' with the Everton teenager. Southampton's Matt Targett was preferred at left-back leaving 19-year-old Galloway disappointed. "He was very close to being named in the squad," Southgate told the ECHO. "It was tactical. We only really wanted one defender on the bench because we wanted forward options for tonight. "We thought we could cover right full-back because Joe Gomez could go to left full-back. Unfortunately Joe picked up a knock and Dom (Iorfa) was straight in at right-back.

"But we have been pleased with how Brendan has worked with us, we like him, he is doing really well at his club and I had difficult conversations with five players who couldn't get changed. "There was nothing more in it than that."

......was chatting with my son about this last night. Bottom line was that I/we wouldn't swap him for any players mentioned by Southgate. Indeed, the same applies for any left back in the recent senior squad. Regardless of who is being selected for internationals we know we have a diamond on our hands and that's what matters. I'm surprised there's no talk of a new and significantly improved contract.

This has been mentioned, it was in the guardian last month and at the bottom of the article the Echo posted about him being omitted from the England U21s the other day.

Depends really, the defenders need to habe a good understanding with one another and chopping and changing them (and the rest of the side) wont work.

The Germans had the right idea in promoting the u21s into the full squad and reaped the rewards. Hopefully Roy wants some longevity.

I like Galloway and am normally a big backer of our players for England. I think it's ridiculous how overlooked Barkley, Jagielka and Stones have been.

However one does have to acknowledge that England are very well covered at left back currently. In honesty Galloway (and especially Gomez) should be nowhere near the squad yet.

Baines will be back fit. You then have lads like Cresswell, Bertrand and Rose who are all playing for decent premier league teams week in week out who have been solid over a period of years. Throw in Gibbs who has often started for Arsenal at left back and you realise how well covered we are. All of these players are of similar ability to "The next Cafu" Clyne.

We are very well covered at Left back, unfortunately across the other positions of the back four that's not the case.

The great thing about Galloway being so impressive as a stand-in LB is that Baines can be gradually re-introduced into the team, decreasing the chances of injuring himself almost immediately.

I read that he played defensive midfield for one of the England youth sides and Dewsnip built the side around him.

With all the centre backs we have coming through is it possible that he could also end up there for us?

I personally don't see it, even when he starts fully establishing himself in the squad (if he hasn't already) at around 24-25, Cleverly, McCarthy, Besic, Barkley, and if he makes it, Ledson will also be there.

Right now Jagielka plays on the left next to Stones, Galloway could be a perfect fit there. With Browning and Funes Mori for cover, we could possibly have our back 4 sorted for a decade*

*We obviously won't, but it's a nice thought.

If I could invite one Everton player round to my house for a marvellous Maccavennie roast dinner it would be this kid. The lad is pure quality, just like my roast dinners. Hope he has another blinder today. He has no fear and I like mentality he has of 'we are Everton and we should be looking down at the opposition as they are inferior to us'. As Boberto says, the kid has a real swagger.

He's due a goal as well, its coming and it's going to be a quality one at that!!
