2019/20 Carlo Ancelotti

If he spends 200 plus mill (net) and we only get 5th or 6th by the end of his spell here I'll be slightly disappointed if I'm being honest I think he's better than that, Moyes used to achieve that regularly, Martinez achieved it and Koeman walked fairly a poor squad to 7th place a mile ahead of 8th, Allardyce and Silva both got 8th and they're not a patch on Carlo, plus Spurs, Arsenal, Man Utd and Chelsea aren't what they were and are in disarray (some more than others) and Leicester aren't much better than us. With a few decent players brought in I'm not going to lie I expect him to challenge for a Champions league place by the end of his 3rd full season here. We never got Carlo in to Finish 5th /6th.
Well, I meant a gross spend of £200M. But I think it's a tall order to expect Ancelotti to go with these players of zero character and mould them into a consistently performing machine. They are WELL off that stature. Moyes developed that over 11 seasons; Martinez benefitted for one season with those same players before they decided to clock off.

Next 3 seasons under Ancelotti with a decent rate of spending should look like:

Top 7/8
Top 6
(with progress) Top 5/6

Dont be under any illusion how massive this job is. The PL may be ropey beyond 7 or so teams, but these players are mentally not at the races. We need to find a leader or three from outside the club to galvanise this shower to get anywhere near the schedule I just set out.

That may not be the case though Dave. A common theme throughout his Quiet Leadership book is one of him desperately seeking a long term project with a family club. It would not surprise me if he at least saw out the entirety of his current contract.
Hopefully so. But that family club has turned on 4 managers in 5 years. If there's any prolonged dip in results, he wont see the benefit of sticking round to hear the boos and see it through.

Outside of the Juiced up Mutants and Citeh, this league is terrible.

I watched Leicester v Chelsea yesterday and both would have been destroyed by our 08-13 teams.

There is a massive opportunity to push into at least 3rd for any club that can find a consistent formula, through good management and recruitment.
I agree it's a terrible PL at the moment. That lot being 22 points ahead right now underlines it. That Liverpool team would not live with a United team of the 90s or a Chelsea team of the noughties.

However, look at the first team squad: a mixture of 3/4 genuine good players of quality + old lags who need binned off + poor players...and most of them have no character.

To get consistency out of that lot (which is what top 4, 5, 6 requires) is almost impossible. The first team needs major surgery to it. That takes time.

The Arsenal Invincibles of 03/04 would destroy this Liverpool side, never mind a United team with prime Giggs, Cantona, Kanchelskis and Sharpe or the Drogba, Lampard etc Chelsea

I see this team of theirs and I KNOW that without those early leg ups from VAR they'd never be this far ahead. City basically saw the writing on the wall that this title was going to be handed to Liverpool and clocked off well before Christmas.

If this PL was reffed like any European match with Euro refs officiating this would still be game on. No question about that.

Will someone please tell me what the bloody hell is going on? First we win from 2-0 down, and with 10 men and a late winner, then I find myself reading and agreeing with one of your comments. If anyone has Satan's number they might wanna drop him a text and tell him to check his thermostat.

It’s an anomaly of a season for them, fair play to them for taking advantage and not blowing it for once, but they will find it much much harder to be defending champions next season

Genuinely feel that officials in this country need to be training with a team of counterparts from across the other big 5 leagues, especially with VAR as a lot of them are being shown up as way out their depths

Don't forget Chelsea sacked him. And Bayern. And Napoli.

That's why he's at Everton. I'm not complaining, however

That looks bad in print. But all of those clubs have a turn style approach to the managers job. Maybe less so bayern. But abramovich is just abramovich at chelsea. And Napoli are nuts right now.

He seems to be lucky the direness of a 2 nil deficit usually means curtains bar the never to be forgotten glory of 1966. Pulling it back a couple of mins before half time just never happens and going down to 10 men is a guarantee of capitulation in this parish - but we won.

"Give me lucky generals and I will slot Josephine for 2 days" is often attributed to Napoleon, Carlo may be our lucky general.

Everton are now nine points clear of the relegation zone in ninth place. Only eight points separate themselves and Chelsea in fourth, but Ancelotti is unsurprisingly not getting too carried away with talk of Europe back on the agenda.

"Realistically, no one knows [where Everton could finish] but we have to try for the top and aim to reach the Europa League next year. If we're able to keep concentrated and fight, then I think we have the possibility of making it."
