While reading the match thread both here and on r/Everton I was thinking to myself do you people really believe that Everton have a half decent squad bar first XI? You work with what you have. Specially when half of the players in the squad are the ones Brands couldn't sell off during the summer.

For me, it was quite enjoyable to watch the 0-0 and thought that was the perfect and most realistic result for Everton to get with half of the squad missing.

Unfortunately, Gomes turned off his head and a penalty happened out of nowhere. Until that pen, Newcastle barely crossed the center of the park and the game was in cruise control.
It's work in progress, and we are progressing I'm sure if the right targets are available in January we will buy.Or get players on loan.

Interesting report in the media that Carlo is here for the long term also that he is not focusing on Isco but on the next game.

Methinks trying to hide interest in Isco.

if a cruise ship is heading in one direction very quickly, it takes a while to turn it around and get it going the other way. I’m not happy we lost, I didn’t want us to, I’d expect us to win, but some of the reaction to the loss and to Carlo in particular is in my opinion over the top. I’d love it if he had come in and within a few months we’d gone from a bottom half team to challenging for the title. Realistically though it might take longer, Carlo will make mistakes on the way also as he did yesterday.
Unless the direction of the cruise ship is dependent on the mentality of the captain, I'm not sure this has any relevance to the point at hand.

Take mane and salah out of liverpool
Take son and kane out of spurs....
Same with a few others. They become pretty toothless.
We all knew it. Lose our key players and we're in trouble.
Some of the comments now are unreal. But predictable. I read on here someone saying other managers have improved players when went in. Calvert lewin is the leagues top scorer. Whats that then? But he has clearly improved with our strongest line up supplying him.
The only real battering ram some are using for yesterday is Gordon. Yeah id like to see him involved more but he is not the difference between losing 4 key players right now. The poor quality back up is.
It will take time to sort that. Best thing for us is we get those missing back and pray we get lucky until we can start bringing in more reliable players.
Take out the rs and City and any one from 10 has a chance...given a bit of (good / bad) form and luck...to make 3rd, 4th or even 10th.
Just look at Villa S'hampton
Villa win 7- 2
Southampton go 4 up and could've been more
Villa get 3 back in 25 mins

Just like us, the league is all over the place like mad women's shight

A bit like the old days when it used to be no domination hard to predict who will win it etc

Which is where a bit of frustration creeps in for me that we didn't push the boat out at the end of the window for that additional, real quality player or, at the very least, a reliable rotation option for our front line.

It felt like an opportunity missed at the time and one or two games later it's proved to be the case, even if having - for example - Josh King on Sunday may not have solved all our issues.

I think the problem is that we brought in 5 players this summer that improved the squad, but at some point injuries and suspensions were going to bite and we'd have to fall back on the same chumps who don't seem to care whether we win or lose. We managed to get shot of a couple of them over the summer but it's going to take a long time to ship them all out and bring in better replacements. The team we put out yesterday was, apart from Allan and Doucoure, the same group that repeatedly let us down last season.

I’m a big fan of Carlo and will back him all the way, but thought the first eleven was wrong yesterday and so were the subs.

Was Gomes doing something completely different in training to suggest he would be a success in that position?

I don’t believe he was laying down a marker to say we need more transfers. Hopefully relationships at the club are better than that.

Needs a new trick up his sleeve for Saturday.

Yeah I understand that and agree. My point was regarding the supposed mentality issue. The poster was saying that we need to get rid of the mentality that we shouldn't expect to go to places like St James's Park and win, and until we do that...we shouldn't expect to go to places like St James's Park and win. I'm saying that's a bit of a mad way of looking at things, not suggesting that I expect us to suddenly win the league.

We did, well we got the best we could...and nobody was moaning 3 weeks ago
But.
We've not only the old deadwood, but the new ones to get rid of now - Gomes, Iwobi, Bernard
Both lots are the mill stones round our neck

Erm, they weren't moaning, but there were several people - in fact, quite a few - who pointed out it was a risk. That's just on here.

You are 100% right that there's a lot of issues with getting rid of the deadwood. But it does feel like a needless risk was taken. It was extremely naive, especially in such a weird season with the added fixture congestion and COVID quarantine risk, to go into the season with two competent forwards, especially when playing a 4-3-3, and no alternative to the right wing position.

To be fair, plenty of people were 'moaning' three weeks ago. It was pretty clear we were lacking there, there were whole threads about it.

Having heard him speak, why should he not rotate goalkeepers? Probably because nobody else seems to do it I thought he was crazy when I first heard it. He isn't, it is a good idea provided your number 2 is OK and Olsen is.
