I think the focus on the players is too one-sided. Of course, they have to take their share of responsibility, but they share that responsibility with the coach and the rest of the apparatus. Being a coach is not just about choosing a formation, and then choosing players. It is much more complicated, and there are many variables that come into play.
It is difficult to criticize Ancelotti when you do not have the full picture. However, we let in a lot of easy goals, and many of these are due to basic things like wrong body position, having only the ball as a reference, bad pressure on the player who has the ball, etc.
I also think we have too little intensity in our pressure game. We do not push well enough collectively, and there is too little intensity. The awareness of a good pressure game is perhaps what has characterized football in Europe over the last decade the most. Much of what we do is not worthy of a pub team.
Furthermore, our build-up play is simply ridiculous. It does not seem as if we have a good plan, and at the slightest pressure we send a rocket up to DCL. Too often we end up with a numerical minority in the last third, and then it is often 2 vs. 5/ 3 vs. 5 Then it is difficult to score goals.
The transition from defense to attack is also pathetic. When we have the chance to take the opponent in imbalance, it goes 10/10 times too slow. No movements in front of the player with the ball, except DCL.
Many of these things should be easy to deal with. It's about running, and running collectively together as a team. All players at this level should be in top form - something I reckon the physical trainers have control over - and Carlo's job is to coordinate this. Give players some guidelines, and practice this in training.
I do not think in the long run - something we now see - that he in PL can get away with playing with JR in that role. At least on a team that does not have top four quality. The teams analyze weak points in the opponent, and attack there. Something that MU was very aware of.
