2020/21 Carlo Ancelotti

Several wrongs do not make a right.

Just because other teams have had odd results, it does justify our performances like Fulham, 2 games against Newcastle, West Ham and so on.

When we have been beaten this season, we have been well beaten. Have not deserved a thing.

Our consistency is a massive issue. Our squad is low in overall quality, bar few exceptions.

20 odd games and in about 7 or 8 we look like a relegation side.

I still would not want any other manager than Carlo right now.
He will get us much better players in the next window.

I'm finding it difficult to think of a league game (other than WBA when they went down to 10) that we've bossed this season. Our style of play is awful, we've relied so heavily on set pieces and crosses into DCL.

I've said before, I think there's a bit of a weird misremembering of some of our recent seasons. We genuinely haven't been anywhere near as bad as some people make out. Up until May 2020 we'd lost 6 homes games to teams outside the top 6 in the 4 years since Martinez left. Since then we've lost 5 out of 9. Obviously home advantage isn't what it was at the moment so it's not an entirely fair comparison, but we're definitely not used to consistently being beaten at home by lesser sides.
Fair enough mate. My ovveriding memory of the last few seasons is a feeling of disappointment more weekends than not barring a spell in koeman’s first and a spell in Silva’s first season.

You’re right though, our home form has been shocking.

You have to admit the way we play football is boring and pedestrian

It might be effective in getting the odd narrow win every now and then but is that good enough given the resources that we have spent on players and managers?

It’s a shame that Scott Parker can get a poor Fulham side to play like that maybe once every 12 games but I can’t remember the last time we even put in a clinical performance like that maybe spurs first game but even then Pickford bailed us out on 2 occasions. We didn’t even have a shot on target in this game until 76 mins at home.

There has to be a bit of perspective though. Every single Fulham fan would swap our league position for theirs and which means they’d take our performances too as it’s been them that have delivered results. We’ve played poorly at times this season but we didn’t fluke beating Spurs Palace WBA Brighton Fulham Chelsea Arsenal Leicester Sheffield United Wolves Leeds. It’s too convenient a narrative to say the times we’ve been poor is Everton’s true level and we’ve edged all these other games. The reality is when we’ve played well we’ve defended better and attacked better to allow us to come out on the right side of games. When we haven’t we’ve made errors and not scored which meant we’ve lost.

He needs to back his instincts to play the defensive set up and avoid attacking full backs and luxury players.

When we have a solid base we actually attack better usually too. The clamour from fans to play attacking line ups should be well and truly over now. We had 3 luxury players on the pitch last night and couldn't get the ball. I want to see direct football with a very defensive back 4. If we can't keep clean sheets then we will never achieve anything. That also means playing Mina and keane or at least never both of Godfrey and Holgate.

No same mate, I don't mean things have been great by any means. I just think sometimes people make out like Koeman and Walsh left us marooned at the bottom of the league and it's some sort of incredible achievement by Ancelotti and Brands for us to even be talking about a top 10 finish, when in actual fact we have very much been the 7th or 8th best team in the league over recent years and currently look like that's still about where we're going to end up. I said last night, our recent home performances are honestly every bit as bad as anything I've seen in 25 years of going. Taking until the 76th minute to have a (tame, long distance) shot on target against a side that hasn't won for 3 months is seriously grim.

Pretty obvious watching that the players failed completely to do the basics that he requires.

Now that will be down to a few things, and yes some of that will be player selection.

It happens...and it certainly happens to us.

Once again a big reminder of how far we are off really pushing that top 4.

I mean there’s no way Carlo sends them out saying “right lads, no intensity today, sit off them, don’t match their effort or desire to win the game, largely just stroll about and it’ll be fine”.

True.. but he might have said:
"Keep it tight at the back and try play it out carefully. But stay deep and don't take any risks. When the chance comes lets move it forward. We are strong on set pieces so when those come we can take advantage of them. It's ok to concede possession as we will maintain our shape and ensure shots are kept to outside the box with minimal risk. We will get our chance during the match and must make sure we are clinical in front of goal"

What you get with that mindset is the unintended consequence of lethargic, devoid of purpose crab football.

Jesus mate when we had the four CB's we were grinding out results but the football was absolutely turgid. Digne is the best LB at the club and must play and the club must work towards implemented an identity and style of play.

We will never keep a clean sheet with Digne and Coleman at full back. Especially with a midfield who don't know how to cover.

You can't have attacking fullbacks, Gomes, Sigurdsson and James. No one is there to win the ball back and even track basic runs. I don't want to see a team like that ever again. It was pure arrogance and never going to work. I want to see us being solid and hard to beat. When we play expansive we can't attack or defend properly so we need the weird systems at Goodison to stop.

Can't agree with that, Davies was our best player until he was hooked. I think that Davies and Doucoure find themselves squeezed out when you have Rodriguez, Gomes and Sigurdsson in the mix as well.
I think that this game proved , once and for all , that you can't play Coleman , James , Gomes and Sigursson in the same team.
Coleman cant cover for James. James won't put a shift in ( which is ok if everyone else does ) and Gomes , Sigurdsson and James are all too static and have no pace.
