2020/21 Carlo Ancelotti

He can only do so much and he has to use his squad.

Players don't have any excuses for the start of that game, we had no drive or desire to effect that game in the first half.

Too many players are looking for the creative players too much instead of taking on their own responsibility and building attacks.

It's too easy to just pass it to James or Digne then that's my work done. Gomes, Coleman, Holgate all guilty not that.

Carlo needed a chance after that 1st half, bringing King and Iwobi on for the start of the 2nd half would have given a more positive response especially with Richarlison so isolated so we needed a more attacking element to our game.

Players like Davies and Doucoure in particular looked dead on their feet so they could have been the two replaced in the 2nd half.

Ultimately this is another games that fringe players haven't taken their opportunity and failed in their own performance and then the team.

We say it every season but it's a huge summer. We have shift a few more on and bring back loan players who have done well to bolster the squad.
Can't agree with that, Davies was our best player until he was hooked. I think that Davies and Doucoure find themselves squeezed out when you have Rodriguez, Gomes and Sigurdsson in the mix as well.

The one thing I simply can't accept about our home performances against the likes of Newcastle, West Ham and Fulham is the low block - it's completely unnecessary against poorer sides.

Every single time we lose the ball the team automatically drops back 15 yards. Compare that to Fulham yesterday who pushed up when they lost the ball to try and win it back as soon as possible (which they often did).

It's not pragmatic, it's downright negative. By all means play like that in away games, but at home against dross like Fulham and Newcastle? Nah.

it was suicidal last night.
The gaps between the lines didn’t help. Midfield was on top of the defence and the ‘attackers’ were stranded - we didn’t have an out all when we were being absolutely pelted by bloody Fulham.

Bar man City all teams are having these results...
Oh sound then doesn't matter then just accept it.

This is the perfect season to take advantage of other teams doing it then isn't it?

It's not like 1 or 2 results either btw this is about the 5/6th home game we have been atrocious. We just aren't comfortable ever, even when we win it's back to the wall every man defending deep for 30 mins kind of stuff. Don't mind that if we are atleast consistent doing it, but we win like that for a game or two and then have a game or two were we can't be arsed.

Why is discussing this classed as a “meltdown?”
It’s a forum to discuss Everton related things and we are discussing yesterday’s appalling performance.

why do people do this? Do they think it’s edgy? Is it to try and look knowledgeable? I honestly don’t get it.
It weren’t aimed at everyone. I read back a few pages and it seemed there was people running round with their pants on their head.

Someone’s just suggested he’s going to walk.

It's true but it doesn't apply for us imo

We've had 4 abject home losses to these sort of teams now. 1 or 2 is fine. 4 is unacceptable and shows a bigger problem.
I agree, it’s part of a bigger problem, but I’m confident we’ll get to the bottom of it given the way we’ve came on in the past 12 months or so.

Last couple of seasons performances like this were the norm and in truth, largely expected. We’ve only added a handful of players, we’re not going to see wholesale changes as quick as we all would like, and unfortunately are still going to witness performances like this along the way.

At least the players will be well up for the next two. We're game raisers at the moment.

I'm just very disappointed to see performances in the last 2 home games that were as bad as anything served up under the previous 3 managers. The Leeds, West Ham and Newcastle games I largely blame the lack of application from the players who allowed themselves to be bullied and outran. Last night was just an utter tactical mess.

Maybe it's because it's Carlo Ancelotti and I foolishly think he can do no wrong, but I was shocked how he set us up last night. I'm not football expert but I looked at the side and the alarm bells were ringing in my head immediately. It's the arrogance that really got to me. He disrespected the opponent with the selection and we are in no position to pick and choose matches.

Several wrongs do not make a right.

Just because other teams have had odd results, it does justify our performances like Fulham, 2 games against Newcastle, West Ham and so on.

When we have been beaten this season, we have been well beaten. Have not deserved a thing.

Our consistency is a massive issue. Our squad is low in overall quality, bar few exceptions.

20 odd games and in about 7 or 8 we look like a relegation side.

I still would not want any other manager than Carlo right now.
He will get us much better players in the next window.

Spurs are
Spurs have not been completely dominated in a match by a team at the foot of the table. They were awful against Chelsea and rolled over by City, but that is a different kettle of fish.
Brighton beat them but not with sort of ease that Newcastle and Fulham waltzed past us.

Resting players, rotating is fair enough. The players we had out there on paper were good enough to be at least matching Fulham’s level of performance. What where his excuses for all the home defeats to the lesser sides last season and the others, Newcastle in particular where we’d come off the back of a two week break? It’s not good enough mate and needs addressing. Saying we were just tired or just couldn’t cope with the pressing game is not really good enough, it’s like saying you’ve got genital warts but refusing to go to the clinic to get them treated, seems we are doing nothing to deal with this style of play.

The problem in my view is a chronic lack of pace all over the team. Most teams in this league can outrun us. It means we are severely limited by what we can do tactically. 4231 with pacy players on the flanks and flat fullbacks funnels all the traffic inside where Docuoure can pressure and all that Davies has to do is patrol the space behind him which is very narrow. The centrebacks can sit deep and everyone is happy. We can then just task the front three with scoring or we score from a set piece.

As soon as we move to any other tactic whatsoever huge gaps emerge because the likes of Coleman Keane Davies Siggurdson James Gomes Bernard are too slow. In the right tactical system we can carry some of them but this is not a team that can play open expansive attacking football. We haven’t got any pace, so when we try it even average teams can run all over us and we can’t get the ball back.

I think Carlo is in a bind between building up confidence playing a rudimentary style of football but every time he trusts the players to be a bit more expansive they fall flat on their face. I’d prefer he just stuck to the system that worked but I I’d errand he probably wants to add variety and move the team forwards to be more possession based and ply on the front foot. They can’t do it though. The players can’t do it.

You have to admit the way we play football is boring and pedestrian

It might be effective in getting the odd narrow win every now and then but is that good enough given the resources that we have spent on players and managers?

It’s a shame that Scott Parker can get a poor Fulham side to play like that maybe once every 12 games but I can’t remember the last time we even put in a clinical performance like that maybe spurs first game but even then Pickford bailed us out on 2 occasions. We didn’t even have a shot on target in this game until 76 mins at home.

We are above them in the league and beat them in the cup, swings and roundabouts...

I've said before, I think there's a bit of a weird misremembering of some of our recent seasons. We genuinely haven't been anywhere near as bad as some people make out. Up until May 2020 we'd lost 6 homes games to teams outside the top 6 in the 4 years since Martinez left. Since then we've lost 5 out of 9. Obviously home advantage isn't what it was at the moment so it's not an entirely fair comparison, but we're definitely not used to consistently being beaten at home by lesser sides.
