2020/21 Carlo Ancelotti

I don’t think we set out that way. We’re forced into it because our players are so much slower and weaker than theirs. So whenever we get the ball we’re under pressure but they can play around us with ease. It needed a formation change but Carlo didn’t do it. To play the 433 we have to have pace along the back line and in midfield to cover the fullbacks as they bomb on. We don’t have pace anywhere. That’s why the flat 4 has been working effectively having 5 players defending and a front 5 attacking. As soon as we try to move towards a more advanced system it falls apart because the players aren’t good enough.
You might be right, but that isn't how it looked. Sometimes you watch a game and you can see what a team is trying to do but it just isn't working, that wasn't the impression I got from that game We never looked like we wanted to engage yesterday. It looked very much like a tactic. We didn't have the centre halves yelling at people to get out, we didn't have a lone midfielder running round waving their arms round trying to get people to join in, we didn't seem to want to get the ball forward early to give ourselves a chance to get on the front foot and build from there. From very early in the game we let them have the ball and sat deep, and everybody seemed perfectly content to do it. The fact we didn't make any changes when it was abundantly clear what was happening also suggests to me that we weren't intending for the game to go any differently.

not sure if siggy and Gomes are a level above Fulham. Put these 2 clowns in Fulham midfield and their entire game plan will collapse. No pace no fight no positive passing, slowing down their attack. Amazing how 2 players can limit the entire team to such an extend.
I hope Carlo will be backed for his signings this summer.

With another window we will be able to complete surely.

We need another CM, a RB and a wide player plus a striker at minimum I reckon. Plus a GK! Hope Allan gets back soon because we are lacking leadership out there. Think he’ll throw a few tackles in a get the team going.

The last thing we need is to lose patience and go back to square one. He’ll improve us if he’s given backing and time.

This. Someone posted in another thread that Mina and Keane do a good job of getting the ball forward - they're not world-class or anything but they've both improved and are pretty decent.

Godfrey spits nails but forward passing isn't his strong suit. Holgate, I don't know what's happened to him.

Fulham did an excellent job shutting Digne down, largely by beating the crap out of him.

Coleman was Coleman, he was excellent coming on late against Spurs but is he really suited for 90 minutes up and down, especially against younger and more athletic opponents?

So that's it for the back four. No one doing a great job of getting the ball forward.

Olsen didn't try much in the way of distributing and he's poor at it.

When he got the ball Davies was ok, but not much better than ok. Lost the ball a few times. Still don't know why he was subbed off though, he was the best of a bad lot.

Gomes was poor. Doucore looked like he was running around with a piano on his back. Someone observed that he was having to help Coleman out too much and I agree with that.

So the front three were starved of service. And with that setup with Sig up front I'm not sure what they would have done with it. Other than Coleman hitting the post did we have a single dangerous chance? I can't remember one.

Terrible.

Can't agree with that, Davies was our best player until he was hooked. I think that Davies and Doucoure find themselves squeezed out when you have Rodriguez, Gomes and Sigurdsson in the mix as well.
I think that this game proved , once and for all , that you can't play Coleman , James , Gomes and Sigursson in the same team.
Coleman cant cover for James. James won't put a shift in ( which is ok if everyone else does ) and Gomes , Sigurdsson and James are all too static and have no pace.

Coleman will be Coleman when we play on the front foot, not having to sit back and have nobody to to link up with. He was the only player that actually had looked determined to have a go.

Shocking stuff all round

We only have Ancelotti for a limited period in all likelihood

This is not a 5 year plan or anything like that. This was our big chance and we are blowing it. If we don't get Europe then we've failed. Its imperative we see huge investment this summer. Why bring in Ancelotti and dont back him?

Football is about winning the next game. These long term plans and talk of projects are a nonsense. They just give players an easy excuse. We have to be much better next season or we are wasting our time and Carlo's time.
We are taking ourselves out of the conversation real quick. In a year where everything is topsy turvy due to COVID, we have a very real shot at the champions league for the first time in years. We are just affording the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham to get their acts together. We had two games in hand to make up against Liverpool who sit 4th and we are wasting that chance.
