2018/19 Cenk Tosun

Had a bit of a stinker last night to be fair

I'm not sure what he needs to do, as he looked fine last season and bagged a few goals

If anything, he should be getting more adept after that, not less

Strikers have always been an enigma for me though, probably because it's the one position I never played at during my younger days (I can only imagine how bad a striker I would have been. I was bad enough at defending, midfielding and keeping, so heaven knows how terrible I would have been up front)

I was one of the people wanting him to get a chance last night. Unfortunately he hasn't taken it and now I think I can see why Richarlison has been played up front even though he's a better winger. This was Tosun's opportunity to stake a claim and now I think he could be in for a spell on the bench and if we get a striker in during the window either sold or loaned out. Not ever going to score enough goals for a team with the ambition I hope we have.

“Ordinary” is how I describe him. He’s not quick but not exactly slow. He’s ok at heading. His finishing isn’t bad. He’s fairly capable at passing. He’s just very ‘meh’.
I said it at the time, but thought his lack of athleticism would hold him back. Now, I think it's more that he doesn't work well as a lone CF in a team that likes to attack with width. Not a bad player, but probably not the right one.

He was alright in a struggling team last year. He's a decent finisher but struggles to get himself into those positions in this league because defenders are quicker, stronger and smarter than him.

His overall contribution just isn't good enough either. People said he had a good all round game but that consists of him controlling the ball and laying it off. The bar is set very low sometimes among fans.

you can see the difference in movement when he plays compared to when oumar and even bambi Lewin do, oumar always gets himself several chances and dcl gets himself a couple yet this slug wants it on a plate.

It’s odd this one. When he has the ball at his feet and yard of space he finishes better than anyone on the squad outside of Gylfi.

The problem is that he is so inept at getting himself in that situation that Richarlison, DCL, and even Omar Niasse are better options at CF; despite the inferior skill sets of the latter.

...unfortunately, despite what @davek & @GrandOldTeam say, I think it will take time to move some players on and continued loan deals might be the only way out for a couple of seasons.

???

My view/point is that we're offloading/loaning out poorly.

Players we need to answer questions, like Vlasic (and Dowell?) are going to no-mark leagues that don't help answer those questions.

We're loaning established names at 29 (Bolasie, Mirallas) to clubs/leagues that will never pay a transfer fee that tops the wages saved. The Olympiakos loan was daft and Fiorentina not much better.

Heck, even the £8m odd for Funes Mori was poor. We signed him from River Plate in 2015 for more than that, he then establishes himself in the Prem and at 26, we sell an Argentinian International for £8m. I saw him score for Argentina against Mexico the other week and thought he must be worth double what Everton sold him for in today's market. We signed a Newcastle academy player for our academy for £5m...

As for Cenk Tosun, as I said on 1st Jan before we signed him;

If Tosun comes in, we still need a top striker - he doesn't have the credentials for that fee and we're not that desperate - we'll finish 7th-9th this season with or without him.

I wasn't wrong and I'm still not.

Well Vlasic has impressed in the CL, so there's that.

The fact is that we needed some money for our deadwood and got what we could. The £8m for Funes Mori was his value at the time surely if you count three years of depreciation. I highly doubt we sold cheap for the sake of it, we needed their wages off the books.

On Cenk, I do think he's a good finisher, he just doesn't suit this system that we play at the moment and that position is so crucial to have someone with pace and skill. He's actually a lot more effective coming on when the game is stretched, weirdly enough.

Has he?

I must confess to not watching CSKA in the Champions League.

I've just looked at the group stages and they're bottom, below Viktoria Plzen with 1 win in 5.

He scored against Real Madrid though didn't he...

Three years of depreciation?

He averaged more games per season for Everton in the Prem than he did for River Plate - he come as a big unknown, really.

He left at 26/27, in no disgrace and is an Argentinian international. We got less than we paid for him and as above, we'd just paid £5m for a centre half for our academy.

How many starting 11s in the Prem does he get in?

He's a useful squad player. We need a lot better.

Aye he's looked good mate, think he has three goals in total for them and has easily been their best player in all of their games. Not saying he'd have been ready for us but I don't think it's a bad move for him.

On RFM, I meant depreciation over the course of his contract. The stuff that is used in FFP exactly and whether you've actually made a profit or loss on a contract.

I didn't rate RFM. He was a liability for us. Maybe we could have got more but the £8m we got for him covers Bernard's wages and Gomes' signing on fee. I don't think that's bad value.

And no arguments on Cenk. But I'm fairly sure that in the summer the plan was to have him as first choice. The management obviously thought they could work with him and unfortunately it doesn't seem to have clicked. It wasn't a massive oversight not signing a striker, not one bit. And it's only when Richarlison has played there and shown what type of striker we really need for that role has it become clear that Cenk can't cut it.

There have been times where I've thought that he could do well here, but it doesn't look as though it's going to happen for him now. I wouldn't be surprised to see him leave as soon as January.

There lies his problem. He doesn't make any form of diagonal run. If the ball is slipped right alongside him he can turn, and as you say - can smack it. That's relying on a very cute pass and the defender losing concentration. In a narrow game it's even more difficult to execute.

I thought he may score and go on a short burst like 4 in 6 but he just can't kickstart it. I think he needs to be coached on being more mobile.
