Champions League revamp

......playing Devils Advocate;

1) If invited, would Everton have joined the European League?

2) Would your reaction be the same if Everton had joined?

There will be allegations of ‘sour grapes’, so might even be worth a options/questionnaire thread.
1) If we were one of the big lot yes of course we would follow suit, this will have been discussed for ages and to get all of the involved will have taken a lot of behind the scenes stuff probably backhanders.

2) I'd be made up to be part of it but would hope the cub would tell it to do one. The games dying. No such things as a level playing field anymore.

It'll be interesting to see how a scenario like this would have an effect on player transfers between these clubs. A lot of pros have come out today voicing their opposition to the plans, including a handful from the 12 clubs themselves.

Thought that might happen. Klopp's on record in his opposition to such ideas.
Helps that he probably has taken that group as far as he can, but I try not to be cynical about these things.

I feel for the players, literally not one of them has grown up, trained, dedicated himself to his profession to play against Tottenham eight times a season across Europe, Asia and North America.

Possible. The existing CL is compromised by virtue of having too many (crap) sides in it and too many meaningless fixtures as a result. By all means create a new true champions competition but if you restrict it to champions only, these desperate clubs (many of whom are in truth fully bankrupt - the RS and Utd chiefly) are not able to agree to it. Fine. Let them go bang and do a rangers. Confront them head on.

I dont think anyone is discussing a true champions league like it was in the early 90's.

The new proposal is a 20 team tournament 15 fixed and 5 invitational places 12 teams announced so far

6 Premier League
3 Spanish league
3 Italian League

Lets say the remaining teams are PSG, Porto and Ajax for the fixed places and the other 5 places would come from the winners of the 3 uefa competitions and 2 invites for random historical big clubs. So that is maximum of 11 nations represented in this new competition.

Uefa have 55 nations currently able to qualify for the champions league and any proposed changes need to be voted by each domestic football association, Uefa would never have got this through a vote. But now it is on the table. I think this is just part of a negotiation, I think if the founder member thing is dropped and teams qualify through domestic position and or winning the europa league or europa conference then I think this could go ahead and there would be a lot less opposition to it.

I think the thing Uefa have on their side is they have the actual Cup. no matter what its name is, players around the world want to win that particular trophy that all the big players have won in the past also having the top 2 clubs in Germany say no to the new competition is big for Uefa. The clubs have a lot of power too though. winning the The champions league trophy will seem less important if you are not going to include; Man United, Liverpool, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus, Inter Milan and AC Milan (the others, are less important)

1) The owners would've gone for it I think. Or Moshiri and Uncle Uzi would've, at any rate.
2) I'd be even more pissed off.

Even if this lot crawl back away from the precipice in the coming days / weeks after they all accept a new CL format, the damage is done.

Liverpool, in particular - with their furloughing of staff and now this grab for money in the teeth of a deadly pandemic - are outcasts from football. A club so completely wedded to the profit motive they are an affront to the football family.

Some of their fans will no doubt get themselves in the media in the next few days with their BS stories about what Shanks would have said, but they own this too. Doing somersaults over FSG acquiring them after the Hicks and Gillett debacle; then watching on as that club demolish communities around Anfield and commodify all aspects of the club. They've allowed a monster to grow and this is the day of reckoning. So it's no good them wringing their hands today when / if they pipe up.

I didn't anticipate the the clubs would go ahead with an announcement and website launch, they are clearly throwing down the gauntlet.

It makes it much harder for them to climb down, but I still expect UEFA to cave-in substantially to their demands regarding the ongoing Champions League.
If that is the case, then we/Everton, are left the losers once again.

From our point of view, I would still rather that the Premier League excluded them and we start anew in August, however much that explodes the foundations of everything, including the new stadium.

Nothing will change fundamentally in club football unless the elite clubs are confronted, if it isn't now then its just kicking the can down the road yet again.

I have no objection to their new league, none whatsoever, let them all go and enjoy it, but don't patronise, insult, and destroy the domestic clubs by gate-crashing their competition every weekend. You can't literally have that much cake, and eat it. That's all.

"It is anticipated that a further three clubs will join ahead of the inaugural season, which is intended to commence as soon as practicable.”

Well, you never know..

I've never protested anything, me.

But I'd be at Goodison/Finch Farm, egging the fanciest car I could find.
