It's the daftest format. A 20 team league where 15 clubs remain in it every single year but 5 lucky clubs are awarded a place in it based on actual performance merit. It's like some sort of football make a wish foundation.

For what it's worth, I don't think there's any way this will go ahead and all it's going to do is give these clubs more leverage in the CL reform. They've been begging for bigger prize money for the biggest clubs for years.

No it's not even that. It's not on merit, they would be chosen every year. There's no set qualification criteria, they're just invited.

I mean, speaking from perspective, in Rugby League, they introduced Franchising about 10-15 years ago, and it was absolutely garbage.

Yes, the race for the title is absolutely huge, great fun, same for European spots, but so is relegation. So how are you selling this to fans? 10 games, and if you're 6th or lower, you could be well out of play after 4-5 games, thats 5 games of absolutely nothing, literally boring, mundane football... I'm not buying it.

To be fair (ish) to them i would assume that all the ones who want this to happen have zero link to the city or the club at all other than watching them on telly.

I would like to think even their local fans are massively against this.
