We’re barely two weeks into August and companies are already announcing their advent calendars.
Last week, we wrote about Yankee Candle’s three new calendars, and now Harrods is following in their footsteps with a beauty advent calendar filled with samples from 25 luxury brands.
The entire collection has a full-price sale value of £680, so it’s no surprise that the calendar itself is rather expensive at £250.

The calendar features an illustration of the emporium’s famous facade and the 25 mini drawers contain products such as Charlotte Tilbury’s Wonderglow face primer and the Nars Velvet Lip Glide.

Annalise Fard, director of beauty at Harrods told Harper’s Bazaar: ‘The product edit is carefully selected by our talented beauty buying teams who have ensured perfect synergy between the cult classics and this year’s “must have” beauty launches.’

‘Not only are we able to champion much-loved brands that they are already familiar with, but we are also able to offer them the art of discovery – introducing them to new, contemporary brands such as Tata Harper, Sunday Riley and Sol de Janeiro.’

Last year’s Harrods advent calendar was a huge success.
But this year’s calendar has been completely revamped, and is worth nearly £100 more.

Annalise says that beauty calendars are appealing to customers because they’re becoming more ‘health conscious’ and they reduce the amount of chocolate that we’re eating at Christmas time.
But come on – Christmas is for indulging, so don’t worry about your waistline. It’s tradition to eat chocolate every morning throughout December, right?
And if you want both chocolate and beauty treats, there’s no harm in buying one of each.

Harrods Christmas grotto only open to big spenders - and their friends
It is a magical Christmas tradition adored by children, but this year Harrods has decided they will only be allowed to sit on Santa's knee if their parents have spent enough in store.

For the first time the famous Knightsbridge department store has said its annual Santa's grotto is "invite only", making it accessible only to regular Harrods Rewards customers deemed to have splashed enough cash over the past 12 months.

The Daily Telegraph has been contacted by Harrods shoppers with children who say they are so angry at being denied an invitation to visit Santa that they are prepared to boycott the store.

One mother who claimed she had spent around £12,000 at Harrods over the past year said that she "was made to feel like c---" after staff told her she was not a big enough customer to take her children to the grotto.

Only selected Harrods customers have been invited to bring their children to the grotto this year.

She claimed she was told by a member of staff that even people who had spent £15,000 in a year might not qualify to gain access.
Harrods declined to reveal what customers would have needed to spend to be invited to meet Father Christmas, claiming a "range of factors" including frequency of visit was also taken into account.

Another mother who was denied entry said the policy had put an end to a family tradition of 20 years. The woman was a Harrods Rewards customer who had spent around £250 over the past year, and was told this was not enough to qualify.

Harrods Rewards customers who are selected to attend the grotto are allowed to bring up to eight guests to meet Santa, which parents denied access to the grotto said they felt rubbed salt into the wound.

They will be charged £20 per child on entry, if they decide to take up the invitation, which includes a visit to Santa as well as an "exclusive gift".

A Harrods spokesman said: "The Harrods Christmas Grotto experience is, this year, available by invitation only. Customers invited to visit the Grotto this year were sent an email invitation on 22nd August.

"We care hugely about making a visit to the Grotto as magical as possible, therefore tickets are extremely limited. Each year, we are overwhelmed by requests for the Harrods Grotto experience, which we make every effort to facilitate. Unfortunately, we simply cannot meet the demand."
