City Break

I personally couldn’t recommend Ljubljana/Lake bled as a banging couple of days.

Failing that, had some boss times in

  • Split (can merge in Hvar)
  • Belgrade - moody City but I loved it
  • Budapest - the ruin bars are a nightmare to get In like
  • Krakow, busy in day and night, got autschwitz, Salt mines (I’ve never done the latter, even though I’ve been twice)
  • Anywhere in Montenegro, but Kotor is up there
  • Anywhere in the south of Italy is usually boss. Rome you’d be run ragged, but that’s the trip I like.
  • If you’re up for something really mad, Try Macedonia or Albania, strangest places I’ve ever been.

Annecy
Cape Town - Eat at the Pot Luck Club.... allow yourself three hours minimum.
Dubrovnik - stunningly beautiful Old Town. Go out of season, something like April.
Paris - It's cliched, but spring really is best. Incredibly beautiful architecture everywhere.
New York - Visit the 9/11 Memorial. Eat at Ellen's on Time Square.
Nice
San Diego & San Francisco - we did these as the start and finish of a road trip through California, but either would work fabulously well for a city break.

All places I've visited before and would return to without hesitation. I'd also say Berlin - the Holocaust Museum and the Berlin Wall visitor centre are both massively impactful - but beware when booking restaurants or dropping into a bar for a few drinks. I don't know if we were just massively unlucky but the service was awful in every place we tried. My spoken German is basic but my wife is fairly competent so we weren't just speaking English slowly and loudly!
Can agree with you on most of them.....only Nice is missing so far for me. Cape Town is great and it’s not a long trek to Stellenbosch and Franshoek both of which are brilliant.
New York is unlike anywhere else....my daughters love the place.
SAN Francisco, whilst a bit tired around the edges in places, does have a charm like nowhere else....laid back and cool.
Dubrovnik is my least favourite spot in Croatia.....and Croatia is probably right up there as my most favourite place to travel. Some stunning islands and villages....off for a 10-day village/island hop there in September and can not wait to get back there.
I’d recommend Montenegro if you haven’t done it so far.

Yes, yes and more yes’s.....cracking part of the World.

Agree with the Montenegro shout

The bay of Kotor is beautiful and Kotor walled city a bit more authentic and less touristy than Dubrovnik

L'enfer c'est les autres Sartre once said.
I went late November. All I saw were "black Friday" ads. They hugged capitalism a bit too hard for my liking.

It's the 'lads on tour' type of tourist I generally dislike the most. They don't represent England well at all, closely followed by Chinese tourists with selfie sticks and the disrespectful Russian wife beater that was my neighbour in Tenerife.
If you stick around Wenceslas Square and Old Town then you'll see the same brands you see in any other city centre. There are lots of smaller, independent stores if you go elsewhere. It's like all the bars and pubs on Old Town square charging god know's what, and everyone ignores the Skautský institut entirely (which is great as you can get cheap beer and food surrounded by locals and not be bothered by tourists).

Similarly, if you want traditional Czech cuisine hardly any tourists go in Havelska Koruna just off of Old Town (nothing is in English and the staff don't speak it). It's a traditional working man's canteen and you get a ticket from the woman at the door, get your stuff and then pay on your way out depending on what the staff stamp your ticket with. Much cheaper than anywhere else in that area and much more authentic. It's traditional cuisine like, so don't expect anything fancy (or vegetables), but if you want some gulas or dumplings it's magic.
