Club Direction

You say it's a fair point. Based on what? The only evidence we currently have at the moment of the direction we are attempting to go in, are 2 hard and cold facts.

We are awaiting planning permission to build a new waterfront stadium, something we have claimed to need in order to compete for the best part of 3 decades,

We appointed probably THE top available manager in the world, with a track record of success in almost every job he's ever had, including this very league.

Do neither of these things not strike you as being even the slightest bit ambitious?

Other than somehow converting Goodison in to a 60k seater super stadium complete with 9 cheese shops and requiring no City Council approval, and going and stealing Guardiola away from Man City because it turns out he was a blue and Peter Reid was his idol, what would you have us do?

This is, as I'm sure you will agree, pure guesswork. You are judging individual players, with different qualities and attributes, coming from several different teams and even leagues, and based on your own limited knowledge of them, assuming they are not what the manager wants or needs, despite also admitting they are in fact improvements on what we currently have.

Teams are built, not just on star power of the individual, but character, belief, balance, chemistry, ideas, tactics, and much more. Its not as simple as buy this 1 player who is great over there, and he will perform exactly the same over here. How you can say players offer no real short or long term improvement before we have even signed them, let alone seen them play? I'm sure you remember when we sold arguably the best young player in the league, and replaced him with Marcus Bent for about the same price we burn away each month on Gylfi the Ghosts wages.

Howard Kendall used to buy the player he needed for the role he needed to be fulfilled, and I've heard many a tale of people scratching their heads at the signings of people like Reid, Gray, Paul Power. What is important is getting the right blend, and if there's anyone I trust to do that, its the finest man manager in the game.

The recruitment policy is what it is. You can have a set of ideals that you aim for, but the reality could be somewhat different. You may have to bend your own rules from time to time. In the short term, I guess signing ready made players with experience gives you a platform to build on.

The most important thing is that over time, the team improves and evolves. And it will take time. If the overall plan is to introduce a core of young, talented players that come in cheap and sell on for huge profits, making us totally self sustainable, then we 1st need a team that they can be integrated into, and at the moment, we don't really have one. All of that is going to take time, and we are very early into the process.

We are somewhat restricted because of the totally unfair FFP rules, and the fact that certain players are always going to choose to go elsewhere. But for every player that decides we are not big enough for them, there will be dozens of others who would jump at the chance. In no small part to the 2 cold hard facts from earlier.

Even though it goes against everything we know, for once, we need to be patient & positive and just try to get behind the team, the manager and anyone else that's involved. Because all this negativity is helping noone.
Based on my opinion, obviously. I’m allowed one, am I not.

Its fairly clear that both the OP and my post were about the team, so I’m not sure why you’ve gone on to talking about the stadium etc. That’s a different matter.

Its no wonder people talk about happy clappers when you see posts like yours. ‘all this negativity is helping no one ’? I don’t see what’s particularly negative about my post. It’s supposed to be a realist take on it, I’m not pouring cold water on anything or claiming we’re doomed, just saying I think our recruitment etc is a little bit muddled.

Of course what I’m saying is guesswork, what a bizarre thing to say. I’m not involved in the club and I don’t have a crystal ball, what else could it possibly be? I think saying ‘obviously you never know’ makes it clear that I’m not assuming anything about where these players would take us. It’s a football forum for giving opinions. I’ve given one and you’ve lost your head about it and started making up arguments that aren’t being put forward to make it sound like everyone else is a swivel eyed loon and you’re the voice of rationality. Whatever floats your boat I suppose.

I really can’t understand where this club is going at the moment.

It seems to be a patchwork of multiple “projects”.

I seen a plan we could get behind when we decided to target young players for big fees on lower wages, with a splatter of experience in there.

We have been rumoured with senior pro’s lately and not these young players we could sign for big fees with high ceilings.

I find it hard to understand where the club is going and it’s frustrating me.
We averaged the 4th youngest side in the prem last year and were awful. The idea we should buy MORE kids and chuck them in with mason, Richie, Gordon etc is utter madness. It’s clear we need experience and leadership.
The players we’ve targeted so far will give us 3 or 4 years and, will hit the ground running.
Meanwhile, the boss man can add you g players to the side over the next few years.

It makes total sense to anyone with half, maybe even a third of a brain.

Going thru this thread - I have one thing to say
Please all ……………….. CALM DOWN !

OK two things
In Carlo I trust …………………..

These players were all available in/from Jan.

LCB: Gabriel 22 (£30mil)
DM: Guimaraes 22 ( £18mil)
RB: Emerson 21 (£15-18mi
Total circa = £63/68mil

All well known high potential Brazilian players in/around the Brazil national squad.

Pickford
Emerson Holgate Gabriel Digne
Walcott Guimaraes Gomes Iwobi
Richarlison DCL

It seems as though were also after a RW this summer + Gordon coming through may leave us just needing to improve on Gomes/Pickford.

OR for similar rumoured £60mil++

Pickford
Arias Mina Holgate Digne
Walcott Allan Doucoure Iwobi
Richarlison DCL

Very bland, uninspiring recruitment with no upside and high wages.

Its very exciting to see new signings rumoured but on paper this comparison just puts huge pressure on the manager to deliver a short term high placed finish and for us to need to spend big again to replace all 3 signings.

Happy to wait until the end of the window but this doesnt look impressive at all.

On paper those are great signings but absolutely no guarantee that they could adapt to the Premier League. So while that £60m looks inspired now, what if it doesn't work out? We can't afford to risk that £60m. Everyone on here was loosing their minds when we signed Kean for £30m and now they are all writing him off.

The manager knows, to a point, what he is getting with Allan and we know Doucoure has done well in this league. It lowers the risk in a season when we need to be more risk-averse than ever.

Ive posted before that i see the reasoning behind signing Allan and Doucoure. Gives us 2-3 years to improve the rest of the squad.

On the flip side of course their fees need to be written off and the team would need to finish in europe.

To the top where we all should be aiming to go because if we don’t what’s the point?

We all want t get to the top of the pile, mate (or at least be in the mix). But like any goal you set in life, you need to have a series of achievable smaller goals to help you get there. The process of shipping out players and replacing them with better versions is going to take time in itself - remember, the previous managers all thought they'd brought in the right players to "take us to the next level". Plus, we don't really know whether or not Carlo Ancelotti is the right man for the job yet; and we'll not get to know the answer to that for another 12 to 18 month or so, by which time he should have at least a few of 'his' players at the club who are able to play the way he wants. It's going to take time and we are going to need to be patient for a bit longer.

Personally, if we show an improvement in our play next season, plus get to 8th or above and have a good run in either or both of the cups, I'll be fairly happy we are on the right track. And if it takes one or two 30+ year-old players to help us lay down a solid foundation... then so be it.

Talking about goals and targets, I just realised that from our recent former managers, Ronald Koeman actual reached the goal he set out to achieve... he became the manager of Barcelona.

For me, if we aren’t signing a player that we can sell to our rivals as soon as he becomes any good then he’s not worth signing at all. Nothing quite beats that feeling of achieving re-sale value from selling your best players once they reach their peak years.

I love a good cup run. Nothing quite beats that feeling of being knocked out in a quarter-final. Or even a semi-final. Semi-Final defeats are just the best!

Same goes for 8th place finishes. That feeling of not qualifying for Europe and finishing behind Leicester and Wolves is just pure ecstasy!

Did you fail to read the bit about being 'on the right track'? If you are looking for some sort of instant fix next season... I'm pretty sure you are going to be disappointed.

We should be aiming for success, not another repeat of the last 30 years. If disappointment happens then so be it, we will have to live with it like we have done for decades, but we shouldn't be setting being knocked out of the FA Cup as a target, or as a measure of success.

I went on a Watford forum the other day, and someone described us as the Middlesbrough of the North West. It's hard to argue, when you see numerous people, not just yourself, talk about finishing 8th and being knocked out of the FA Cup as a measure of success.
