Saw a vid earlier of a Harrier with a broken nose wheel landing on a "stool" on a carrier. Brass balls on that man/woman. Will put it up later.
I have seen that as well.

And those balls will be shiny as hell on any Navy vessel thanks to "Never-Dul" and plenty of sailor grit!!

I thought the shine was due to constant application; does the Navy keep the "practice prevents piss-poor performance" adage as well?
Exactly. But rather than your reason given, it is more like:

Chief: "Go shine the brightwork"
Sailor: "But Chief, it is already shiny!!"
Chief: "If you think you are standing around here doing nothing, there is a counseling chit with your name on it"
Sailor: "On my way to shine the brightwork Chief!!!!"

Yeah, we have this thing we call 'busy work' (as does many I suspect) where it is perceived as better for you to be actively doing something, regardless of how useful it is, rather than be seen sitting/standing around doing nothing.

Washdowns will continue until morale improves!

@LinekersLegs It's usually hard to miss, looks something like this

RAFG Harrier GR3 lands gently without Mainwheels...just nose, outriggers and tail

Ok, @LinekersLegs, here is 28L and 28R at SFO. It's a lot of concrete in the daytime, but generally you always check that the number is what you're cleared to land, then also that the number matches up with your heading. Not too hard to find the correct runway, but mistakes can be made. (It's easier to create an incident by taking the wrong taxiway or crossing a runway unitentionally, but things look different from the ground.)

But this incident happened at 11:56 pm, so it should have been lit up like the 4th of July. Notice the long trail of lights leading to the runway (the rabbit).

This is what it looks like live. Also, the taxiways should have blue edge lights, which are not used on runways, and this one has green lights on the center of the taxiway, which are also not used on runways.

Ground incidents are a different matter, and some places (like Chicago Midway) are really difficult to get around if you're not familiar. Too many intersections and places to make a mistake, with little room for error.

Basically from the ground, it all looks like this:

Except that sometimes it's more like this, and you've got to know whether that's a runway or taxiway ahead of you:

Thanks, you are making me far more serene that the pilot was just a gormless idiot! I've actually seen that trail of lights heading into the bay when I've been on an evening flight that had to circle - hard to believe anyone could have veered off onto the taxiway approach, you'd think if was going to be confused would have headed for the left runway instead.

I hope Air Canada is looking for a new pilot - they should consider this guy!
