Now that I'm thinking about this again, Dylan is perfectly correct (even if unintentionally) because a true sideslip keeps your heading matched to runway heading and controls drift with the upwind wing (turned down, into the crosswind).

All that to say it's hard to see down the runway through the side window when side slipping.
Sitting in a right hand window seat whilst that landed would have been fun lol

The one time I flew into Wellington (NZ), I could (just) see the runway from my seat on approach.

Course steered vs course made good.

The most extreme 'crabbing' we did was when we were in the gulf stream. A good 4-5 kts of current will easily push an 18,500 ton submarine around. When crossing the stream, perpendicular to the current, we would steer as much as 25 degrees off course to make course good.

Just returned from South Africa with Mrs. Tree: we flew with Virgin Atlantic on a 787.

Premium Economy on the way out (Heathrow to Johannesburg) - ok. Better than BA premium economy, (Virgin plane was cleaner, more comfortable and the cabin staff were better than anything I've ever seen in BA livery) but not as good as Norwegian premium economy (much more legroom with Norwegian, and they are usually pretty cheap).

Upper Class on the way back - we paid £400 each to upgrade and it was worth it for the completely flat bed. For the first time ever on a flight I managed to get some sleep. Loads of extra space, no gormless fool in front of me reclining their seat and complimentary lounge access before the flight. Food was nothing special, nor was the wine... but who picks an airline specifically because of the food? One minor gripe with Virgin Atlantic Upper class is the fact that they expect you to pay extra to use wifi, which is bang out of order given the price of the seat.

Every time I read this, I wonder why the Gulfstream has such great trouble with crosswinds... sorry for my confusion. Still a beautiful bird...

Ok, so I'm a huge airliner nut. Love looking at pictures of airliners, watching Youtube videos of take offs and landings. Fascinated with air traffic control. When I was younger, I'd go down to the airport and take pictures of various planes.

Now, I'll sit there with Flightradar24 up on my computer and then tune into the airport tower of choice and sit there and listen to the planes landing and taking off while watching online.

I had a business trip last year where I could have had a straight flight from Houston to Seattle but I found out that if I took the Houston to Denver to Seattle flight, I could fly on the new 787 so I paid the extra $150 out of my own pocket just to do it.

Some of my favorite websites:

Anyone else got this sickness or is it just me?

Driving through Tex's neck of the woods today and saw an A380 in the flesh (departing GWB?). [Poor language removed] huge bird she is.

They fly over AKL all the time. Think there are several routes and carriers who fly them here. They are pretty darn big!

I have a friend whose bother flies them for Emirates (or Ethihad, I can't remember) and he shows me pictures all the time, but seeing one in person is something else. That's a big airplane.

The C5 is a big bertha as well! And I have flown on one of those!

I even had free reign over one sat on the tarmac at Hickham AFB for 12 hours.
