Computer games.

Yep. That seems to be the case lol

It’s why some of the pre built PCs are a bit appealing. I’ve tried to build similar PCs at PCS and other sites but as soon as I get to the GPU the price becomes silly and beyond pre built equivalents. I don’t mind if I have to make a compromise on a part which I can upgrade in a couple of years time. I’d prefer to do that as opposed to lowering my budget across all parts.

I’m not that bothered about the ultra settings. I currently play DayZ on a PS4 Pro/4K and at peak times it must be about 15/20 FPS. I can’t deal with it any more, so the bar isn’t that high to begin with.

Good point. I suppose the point i'm trying to get at with opting for punch 3 series GPU and CPU is that next-gen consoles are so powerful now that if you wanted a PC to go beyond them you'd need to splash £1.5k ish. You could compromise and get a cheaper GPU which would give you 50-60fps on some games but that's the same amount you'd get on PS5 - just more if you're gonna spend that much money it's worth going that little bit further to make a big difference.

But defo not the greatest time atm like @longers said. There are wait times of months for a lot of cards - I got a 3070 earlier this month and it took about 7 weeks in total from buying to arriving.

I considered the PS5 but DayZ is a shadow of the game on console than it is on PC. That and I really fancy iRacing. It’s just time to upgrade from consoles in think.

I get what you’re saying completely though. I normally end up spending more than my original budget because of this.

I found this and it seems pretty good and within my budget. I definitely don’t need a 5tb, nor a headset, so you could knock a bit off that price. But again the GPU is either unavailable or silly prices. I’m not in any mad rush either, so I’ll hang on for a deal.

Yeah if you're in no major rush it might be worth hanging on until closer to Summer when things will hopefully start to resume to normal. Agree that consoles and 1440p are defo the way forward, if you pay for a good base PC now it could last you 10 years with the odd upgrade to GPU/storage. I'm relativley new to PC gaming having always been on PlayStation and the difference is incredible!

At a glance this seems decent. I’d add a 500gb m2 for the OS and frequently used games. Also would up it to 16gb RAM.

That PC in the link I wouldn't recommend honestly. The GPU is a 1080p card so wouldn't be great at 1440p and the CPU will bottleneck the PC, as someone mentioned AMD are miles ahead of Intel at the moment.

Cannot stress it enough, if you want a proper gaming PC which will be kitted out all over you'll need to get a custom rather than off-the-shelf. A lot of the time with the pre-built PC's they include some punchy features up-front but they then cheap out with some of the backend stuff.

That CPU really wouldn't bottleneck it mate, it was also me who mentioned AMD being miles ahead. For easy reference here's that same CPU at base clock paired with a RTX 3070...

The 360 from what I've seen offers somewhat comparable performance to a 1080 TI which was my previous card. Yes it's a 1080P orientated card but it'll still do a commendable job at 1440P, especially with his games mentioned. Honestly, he'll get more 'bang for his buck' from a 360 TI if that's the way he wants to go but that build I posted can at least offer him something to think about, same as you are which is fair enough.

Fair. I just don't see the point in buying a 1080p card to play on 1440p. The other red flag for me on that build is the PSU being only 550w - they're notoriously hard to remove and replace.

Get your point though. I just really think that if you're going to invest £1,000+ on a rig, you may as well do it right rather than sacrifice something here or there, particularly when it comes to CPU and GPU.

Thats pretty similar to what I have, I paid 1050 for it 12months ago.

Personally I don't think you need the 3060 graphic card, not for Dayz bruh.

Yes I know you will play other games, but graphic cards are the easiest thing in the world to upgrade at a later date.

But I'm cheap, so its up to you fam.

Not sure about that mate, I've built a few PC's and there really isn't anything tricky at all, especially with modular PSU's.

Anyway, hopefully @Baines' left foot has something to work with anyway. I'll always recommend building your own but I understand completely why someone would go for the peace of mind option.

Mate that's boss. No shame in that at all - I'm 44 and would kill for all that gear. Since when is gaming shameful anyway?

You get men in their fifties still obsessing over trainees and the WWE so gaming is totally acceptable.

I have a PS1, 2, 3 and 4. Sadly I've had loads of other systems over the decades but never held onto them.

Can we all come to yours for tea?
If you’re ever anywhere on the east coast near Lowestoft, give me a shout, you’ll be more than welcome :cheers:lol

Finished The Medium last night. It's very decent but it feels as if there's something missing. While it looks really nice, I'm quite surprised it's only for this gen as it looks like it wouldn't have pushed the last gen too hard, and I think they might have missed out by not making it a smart delivery title. The gameplay is good, but it all feels very much on rails, and the fixed camera drove me round the bend on several occasions. I think I wanted it to be much creepier/scarier than it actually was - although Troy Baker puts in a great performance as the monster. It's pretty good, and definitely worth a look if you have Game Pass (think I may have felt a bit short-changed had I actually bought it). Anyway, on to Disco Elysium...

Maybe it’s an idea to get a cheaper GPU for now and wait until the prices drop back to normal levels. Hopefully a good deal will come along.

Thanks for your help and to everyone else. I feel a bit more informed now.

I’ve warmed to the idea of building my own. I have a tonne of free time at the moment and it could be a little project. Those GPU prices are making it very difficult though, and makes some pre builts an attractive option for a novice.

Yeah tbh mate if you're in no massive rush, I think it could be worth waiting until the second half of the year, that's when things will probably resume to a bit of normality either way. Or like you said you could spec a strong system now with a compromise on the GPU and wait until stock level/prices get better and then upgrade. GPU is one of the easier things to change in a PC.

Go for it mate, there's plenty of guides online but have a look at LinusTechTips on YouTube, he's my go to for all tech.

My first build took me about an hour and a half and that was with me being extra careful at every step. My last one was 30 minutes odd. It's very satisfying watching your own build POST. Trust me, nothing is hard about it, use sites like PC part picker to ensure compatibility if you're unsure about anything, all you should need is a Phillips head screwdriver, it really is easy. Good luck.
