Computer games.

Subnautica is free on the PS Store. I’ve had my eye on it for a while so I’m glad I didn’t buy it. Supposedly a great exploration/survival game.
Such a great game, this. The whole game world and story is genuinely compelling.

I usually hate survival mechanics in games like this, but they are implemented so well for this it works within the context of the story.

Finally got round to sorting out my gaming room. As I’m 42 this year, I’m feeling an equal amount of pride and shame...

Mate that's boss. No shame in that at all - I'm 44 and would kill for all that gear. Since when is gaming shameful anyway?

You get men in their fifties still obsessing over trainees and the WWE so gaming is totally acceptable.

I have a PS1, 2, 3 and 4. Sadly I've had loads of other systems over the decades but never held onto them.

Can we all come to yours for tea?

PC nerds, I need some advice por favour.

I think I’m going to move from PS4 to PC. I’m probably going to go for a pre-built/custom built PC, as I want one point of contact for a warranty, and I want to avoid daft GPU prices. Not a chance I trust myself building my own. My budget is about £1,200 - £1,400 but that needs to include a mouse, keyboard and monitor.

I’m a complete PC novice but basically I want to play DayZ in as high settings as possible with mods added etc. I don’t want to have to upgrade it for 3 years. It’s all I really play so the PC will be almost solely for that. Also I’d like to give iRacing or rFactor a go at some stage.

I currently play on a PS4 Pro on a 49” 4K TV and I don’t want to drop resolution. So maybe a 1440p set up on a 27” monitor would be similar? A 4K set up is probably beyond my budget.

Anyone got any tips on where to start, what to avoid etc?

Any help much appreciated.

Just seeing this, i'd add mate that to get a PC that's as good as next gen consoles but also futureproofed for over 3 years you're looking at around £1,500 for the PC alone. Add in £300 for a good 1440p, keyboard and mouse can be got fairly cheap though.

I used a website called PC Specialists - they build custom rigs that pretty much tick all boxes you need. One of the things they always say is that it's worth saving an extra 1-2 months of money in order to help you pay for a really good machine rather than lowering your spec just to fit your budget.

Something like this? https://www.scan.co.uk/products/sca...b-ddr4-12gb-nvidia-rtx-3060-1tb-m2-ssd-win-10

Leaves you room for accessories in your budget. Looks very respectible that PC for the price.
Either will be fine for 99.9% of gamers.
That looks good value compared to what I’ve been looking at. Thanks mate.

For some reason I was under the impression that AMD was superior to Intel, so I’ve mainly been looking for those. Is this not the case?

That PC in the link I wouldn't recommend honestly. The GPU is a 1080p card so wouldn't be great at 1440p and the CPU will bottleneck the PC, as someone mentioned AMD are miles ahead of Intel at the moment.

Cannot stress it enough, if you want a proper gaming PC which will be kitted out all over you'll need to get a custom rather than off-the-shelf. A lot of the time with the pre-built PC's they include some punchy features up-front but they then cheap out with some of the backend stuff.

Ive been running a 1440p monitor off a Nvidia 1080 for years now, it still hits good frames on just about everything bar MSFS2020

I used to run 3 x 1440p off a 1080 as well, all this with an old 4750k i5 CPU

gaming at 1440p does not need modern beefy specs, 4k does though.

With that said a 3060 card isn't going to be that future proof

I’ve looked at PC Specialist but I have very little knowledge of PC parts, and so any attempt to customise my own PC ends in frustration and confusion and me just closing the page. I’d probably need someone with knowledge to help build one with me.

I really liked the look of the Dell PC @Brownie linked but it expired. I’ve also been looking at hotukdeals at pre built or systems other users have configured.

It you're wanting to max specs out on 1440p tho a 3060 isn't gonna be the one there, the 3060Ti would be a better option as it's built for 1440p gaming.

To max out games like Red Dead or Cyberpunk you'd need a solid CPU and GPU and one of those will futureproof you for years too.

Go on their forums and post a thread - I did the same. You just need to give your use cases and any other details so budget/monitor etc. The experts on there will build a rig out for you that you can then go ahead and order on their site. I wouldn't be getting an Intel CPU, they're so far behind AMD these days.

Fair enough but maxing out games is pointless most of the time, tons of settings make zero tangible difference to visuals (between high and ultra for example) unless you do a side by side and actively try and spot the minute differences.

I hit about 50-60fps on RDR2 with graphics that basically look more or less identical to what it looks like maxed out, just takes a bit of time working out what settings do f all when maxed out, in RDR2 there are quite a lot of them.

That said better GPU is always good

It shows how much I know, but I just assumed that the higher the number on the GPU meant the better it was. Now I realise the important number is the last two digits. Am I right in saying a 2080 is better than a 3060?

The thing I’m finding with the pre built PCs is there’s more GPUs available. I’m on PC Specialist now and every GPU better than the 2060 is sold out.

You have chosen a bad time to buy a PC, high end GPUs are in short supply and have been for months.

2080 is a fair bit better than a 3060 but its also currently bad value as it still costs a bucketload due to the shortage of 3080/3090s and also the crypto mining boom that has somehow meant that my ancient 1080 still sells for over £300

True, if you're not bothered about maxing them out. However, you don't wanna bottleneck yourself. Got to remember Red Dead came out 3 years ago, the next offering will 100% require a punchy GPU to run at high settings.

2080 is still a great, albeit, older card. The 3 series cards have been released over the past year and have taken everything up a gear, the 3080 and 3090 are now the best for gaming but they cost a whopping amount of money. Unless you're a competitive gamer or playing 4k and have the money, no need to go down that route.

For 1440p you'll want either a 3060Ti or a 3070. The 3060 would be low end 1440p but the card itself was built and designed to be a high-end 1080p card.

Yep. That seems to be the case lol

It’s why some of the pre built PCs are a bit appealing. I’ve tried to build similar PCs at PCS and other sites but as soon as I get to the GPU the price becomes silly and beyond pre built equivalents. I don’t mind if I have to make a compromise on a part which I can upgrade in a couple of years time. I’d prefer to do that as opposed to lowering my budget across all parts.

I’m not that bothered about the ultra settings. I currently play DayZ on a PS4 Pro/4K and at peak times it must be about 15/20 FPS. I can’t deal with it any more, so the bar isn’t that high to begin with.

Got Cyberpunk for PC over the weekend and it's pretty impressive! Have settings turned up to Ultra with Ray Tracing and my god it's spectacular. Couple of silly bugs aside I'm enjoying it so far.
I really enjoyed this... only completed the main story but still have tons of side quests to do, so will probably go back to it at some point as it really is a lot of fun. After all the horror stories about it, I managed to play through the campaign without one crash (although it threatened to on a few occasions).
