Computer games.

Went through my long list of 'games-bought-on-sale-but-never-played' and started up Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak and its genuinely a really good RTS.
Just like it original Homeworld games, it has this persistent fleet mechanic as you go through the single-player campaign, where you start the next mission with the units and resources you finished the previous one with.
Playing on the hardest difficulty (Classic, which isn't really very hard), if you mess up it can really set you back. Likewise if you're really careful it can give you a big advantage on the next one.
Big fan of the story and setting, too. Proper Dune mixed with Battlestar Galactica vibes.

Powerline pass through adapters. Why did I not hear about these things sooner? For the first time in years I have a stable wired connection for gaming.

Has anyone else used one of these? I’m surprised I’ve never heard of them before. They’re a nice compromise between running a long ethernet cable around your house and unstable WiFi. Cheap too.

Saints Row: The Third Remastered is free on Epic this week. Fun game to co-op and worth playing. The big purple dildo bat is legendary.

Their effectiveness is down to how clean your house's wiring is. I've never found them to be reliable but I'm in a fairly old house. A good brand PCI wifi-card and external antenna has given me the best connection I've ever had.

The issue is I have an old VDSL/ADSL connection where I am at the moment. I tried upgrading the router but it didn't have any effect. Admittedly it wasn't that expensive, but it was prone to the same drop outs. The room where the PC is quite far from the router with a few walls separating it. I also only get 18mbps download speed on WiFi, but I'd imagine with faster speeds you may notice a decrease in speed.

I kept getting kicked from certain servers in game but this seems to have solved it.

Skyrim VR...just the vanilla version for now. ...and Wow! I always got bored of the standard version quickly, but in VR it really makes more sense. Physically pulling back an arrow on your bow string, then lining up your target as you would in real life...mega satisfying.

There's mods out there which improve the experience further: more interactive objects & menus etc.

I know most lads on here don't have VR, but i bet some of you have spent a grand on the latest smartphone...for a grand you could get a PC+GTX+Oculus setup, especially when buying refurb. Then all you need is a 2x2m floorspace...and an understanding wife (oh well, can't have them all).

Passionate gamers, even part-time ones like me, owe it to themselves to try VR. It is truly next-level.

So far I can recommend the following Steam titles...if no Steam Sale, look for good-rep resellers charging sale prices...Alyx aside i paid mostly single-digits for these codes:

Half-Life Alyx (the undisputed king of VR)
Fallout 4 VR (far superior to non-VR)
Skyrim VR (ditto)
Project Cars (i've got the first one...a thrill!)
Superhot VR (like chess, but slow-mo shooter)
X-Rebirth VR (for those dreaming of space)
Ayahuasca (not a game, but interesting)

couple more i've just started checking out:

Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice (3rd-person VR)
Subnautica (Ecco the Dolphin's spiritual successor).
Project Stardust (freeware Trench Run!)

That's very optimistic pricing... closer to £2k for something worthwhile.

That said, I enjoy VR but it's still very niche. Price and accessibility remains big issues for it in terms of mainstream appeal - the first one something can be done about as the tech matures, but unfortunately I think it'll always be a niche product simply because of the latter issue; accessibility. It's too cumbersome, even the wire-free options.

Anyone remember Myst ? I remember playing it back in 1995 or whenever and thinking it was the amazing thing ever, turns out its been remade and came out yesterday. Proper cult game

A game I never got on with. Got it the day after release strangely enough, but it wasn't what I expected and went over my head. Although oddly I also got Riven on release and had the same problem with that too.

Anyone a FM player? Really looking forward to the new one
Yeah! One of the main problems for me is transfer fees clubs want. You enquire about a player and they want £129m + £50m in add on & 25% sell on fee, but if you have the same player you get offers of £18.5m + £3m add ons?

Looking forward to FM22 though, when’s the release date?
