Computer games.

That looks a good deal and probably better value than the one with the 3080 you posted.

I don’t know much about AMD CPUs, but I think that one is about on par with a 10700KF, which I have.

If it was me I would try and get something with a 12th or 13th gen CPU, as they were a large step up on the 10th and 11th gen. If you are looking to ‘future proof’ then in my opinion it may be better to prioritise motherboard and CPU, as with most motherboards you’re bound to one generation of processor.

For example, I have a B460 board which is only compatible with Intel 10th gen. I recently upgraded from an i5-10400F to an i7-10700KF, but that’s pretty much my limit now with this motherboard. It’d be much easier to upgrade the GPU in the future.

Not so much a game but has anyone got involved with RFactor the racing Sim?

I tooled up for it in a big way and was in a race series with fellow motorsport competitors, got seriously hooked trying to eek that last 100th of a second off a lap time. An immense sim.

Sadly a new version came out and i couldn't justify another big spend to run it on full detail on the triple screens. Sold the whole rig and sadly never raced again. Bloody miss it on these winter nights plus the banter with mates over the intercoms.

Sorely tempted to tool up again lol

I think it's @longers whos the sim racer on here?

One of the reasons I'm tempted is for the Sims. (not Longers.)

Im a bit of a hardcore motorsport simmer, spent thousands on a rig a few years back (Leo bodnar direct drive wheel, HE engineering pedals etc). Set a few world records on various sims over the years and was in a pro team for a while but have a more casual approach now I’m getting old and have downgraded to a simple desktop setup (CSL DD + CSL Elite LC pedals) which I can setup and take down nice and easily.

Never really been a big fan of rfactor though, it’s all about iRacing and Assetto Corsa Competitizone these days. Rfactor 2 has some great core physics ans FFB but the community is tiny compared to the big two sims (iRacing and ACC).

I’ve been smashing this car since it’s release a few weeks back, absolute joy to drive round Magny Cours

May as well spam a couple of my hotlaps as well whilst I’m here as it’s not often I come across another simmer in the wild lol

Think this is still the WR for the Porsche 919 at Monza

This was a couple tenths off the Nords WR for the MX5 a year or so ago.

Anyway sim racing is like crack and comfortably the most fun to be had with a computer (excluding 14 year old me discovering internet porn in the mid 90s lol)

Jeez, you really were in to it in a big way and took it to very high levels, excellent stuff mate. You certainly did well with it too. Love the links you posted.

I was at a much lower level sadly.

Basically I competed in real life in a Caterham, and the lads in our online private group were talking about Rfactor and forming an online league for a "virtual" Caterham challenge. I'd never even heard of it.
Now I'd played basic racing games at the time but they were a far cry from the real thing and i couldn't take them seriously other than as a computer game. However a video of one of their Rfactor races was posted and I was blown away.
One of the techie guys had put shells on their cars which matched their actual real life race cars and I couldn't believe it.......so I had to join in.

Kit was nowhere near your quality though, I bought the Logitec G27 wheel and pedals set, an I5 desktop and 3 screens, thankfully we had good tech lads in the group to help me get it going lol I got a race seat too later on. Turned out cheap really for such fun as I got a lot of my money back when I sold up.

My first online experience still sticks with me, sitting in my "car" in the paddock and seeing my mates cars around me in theirs.....and actually chatting to them, it was simply a fantastic thing to experience.
What blew my mind even more was how close the sim times were to the real times on circuits we'd been to in real life.....amazing.

Had 4 fabulous years of Friday night racing with an annual christmas online karting meeting.

One other point, it makes you realise how quick the F1 lads are, no way could I lap Monaco at anything like their pace.....and keep it on track for 70 laps at full tilt.

Sorry I posted now, the bug is coming back big timelol

Heh, that's a similar story to lots of people I've raced with over the years. Lots of ex real life racers who used to do track days etc looking for that racing hit 24/7 at a fraction of the cost of the real thing. I went a couple years with no setup and it drove me insane not being able to race. I tried to resist the urge to get back into it but the lust for racing always gets the better of me !

What tracks did you used to drive the Caterham at ? I know someone who used to race a 310r around Oulton Park a few years back.

Similar to me mate re. the lay off, I'm actually looking at desk top computers now lol Really would love to give it another go, I bet it's come on leaps and bounds too with the latest technology.

I have done track days at most of the smaller British circuits but also competed in the sprint championship.
My most exciting memory was to finally compete in the New Brighton Sprint before it was stopped for safety reasons. I used to go with my dad as a kid and always dreamed of competing there, one hell of a course with stacks of people watching. So glad I did it before it ended and got a little trophy for 3rd in class to boot which I treasure.
Wish they did that course on RFactor haha.......I was gobsmacked to see they did 3 sisters, the track I used to practice on and set the car up.

If you have any old kit lying about i'd buy it mate I reckon now;)

The more I research this the more challenging and confused I get lol

I really want to get into PC games but I have such a short temper if it doesn't just 'work' I can see it getting launched out of the window ?‍♂️
I wouldn't bother with PC gaming then. As there is so many different hardware configurations, it will almost always require a bit of tinkering.

And then once you have it all working nice and smooth, Microsoft/Nvidia/AMD/Intel/any other company will update something and break it all again.

yes but all the games are free which is a game breaker for me.
Why pay £50-60 a game when you can get them for nothing. The initial outlay may be quite a hit but if you play 10+ games a year then it will easily pay for itself

I think I’ve just successfully modded Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl with a few QOL and minor visual improvements. The nerds over at the sub on Reddit were very helpful.

I’ve been wanting to get in to Stalker for ages and I'm so pleased with how it runs. I've got everything on maximum and I'm getting around 150 fps.

You can tell it's dated, but it's got a great atmosphere and tension to it. I can't wait to get properly stuck in.

I feel like a proper nerd now having modded a game without it being through the Steam workshop. I'm well on my way to having a neck beard.

I agree with all of that. I was referring to skipping PC gaming if he just wants something that works everytime.

I am 100% PC camp, but I am a realist. It isn't always plain sailing.

Example, DCS VR was a breeze in 2.7, but then the 2.8 came out and it tanked performance. I gave up on it for a couple of months until yesterday, where I probably spent about 3 hours tinkering and then played for about 30 minutes before giving up as I still don't have it all dialled in to a nice smooth experience.

A perfect example of everything being well, then an update happens and apocalypse now!
